The HUB
A Hard Act to Follow – 5 movies about theatre, community, spectators and violence.
Jesus of Montreal (dir. Denys Arcand, Canada, 1989)
The first in a series of five (movies running at the HUB every Sunday at 6:00 p.m.) Denys Arcand’s (“Decline of the American Empire”, “Barbarian Invasions”) Jesus of Montreal came out... in 1989 to great critical praise. Winner of the Juror’s Grand Prize at Cannes, a Best Foreign Film nominee at the Oscars (and winner of 12 Genies), the film takes us on a trip along the Stations of the Cross.
Daniel (Lothaire Bluteau), an underground Montreal actor, is hired to reanimate a stale passion play. A theatre troop is assembled and the performances begin. Audiences and critics agree – they love it; the church isn’t so sure. Slowly the lines between character acting and character living become blurred. An allegory that maintains a fine balance between comedy and piety, critique and celebration, Jesus of Montreal is regarded by many as the best cinematic adaptation of the Gospels.
If you liked the Mel Gibson’s "Passion"…, you’ll love this. If you hated Mel Gibson’s Passion…, you’ll love this.
Text by Bryan Boddy, Film Exhibit Curator
