National Society of Newspaper Columnists Editor & Publisher, formerly a weekly and recently a monthly, with a Web site that updates at least daily, is being closed. Columnists, staff and free-lance, relied on it. Here's the link, via Jim Romenesko, a one-man E&P more than ever, eh?

National Society of Newspaper Columnists "The thing that is unique to a newspaper is they can bring a little serendipity into it.... You can find something that you weren’t looking for. You can go into a bookstore for Sarah Palin’s book and say, 'Here’ s a book by Melville.' ... That’s what we haven’t figured out yet about these Internet sites."

I love Pete Hamill but I think he's got this issue precisely wrong. By precisely, I mean this: the hyperlink of on-line material is the equivalent of print newspaper serendipity on steroids. The appeal of "surfing" the web is all about this possibility of discovering a Melville amidst a....well, another book by an author who shall not be named. Maybe his whole speech (I didn't link to it!) addresses this but based on this excerpt, he sounds off the mark to me.

Indiana is Middle American heartland, with small towns, rolling hills, cornfields and cattle, and the little pink houses of which native son, John Mellencamp, famously sang. And fall is a great time to visit.
