This year, we had a discussion of The Kite Runner, a "read-out" at our local university branch and our 2nd Annual Banned Books Week Costume Gala - lots of fun. We had costumes from The Old Man and the Sea, The Color Purple, The Great Gatsby, Kim, Alice in Wonderland and more.

New Mexico Library Association Are you sometimes frustrated when using information databases? Do you wonder where you can find the Albuquerque Journal from five years ago that your patron needs? Do you want to know where to find answers to reference questions about New Mexico?

Come to the workshop “Using Electronic Resources” at the Townsend Library ...at New Mexico State University in Alamogordo on Wednesday, September 23, and you will learn where to find answers for many of those tough questions your patrons ask. They are in resources which are available to you.

Mark Adams will demonstrate basic searching techniques using one or more of the databases included in Magazines Online and News Bank. Susanne Caro will give a detailed overview of state agency websites.

Registration is restricted to the first 20 people who sign up, registration ends September 18th.

There will be time in between each topic for “hands on” practice. The staff will be in the room to assist you. Bring your questions, so we can use them as examples. We will have practice questions prepared as well.

This workshop is scheduled for 9 – 4. We look forward to seeing you there.

New Mexico Library Association The Bonds for Libraries Political Action Committee will hold an open meeting for librarians and library supporters to plan for the inclusion of a library bond issue on the November 2010 New Mexico Ballot.

We need representatives from around the state and from various types of libraries to help put together an regional ...network of support to advocate passage of a bond bill in the 2010 State Legislature and then by the state's voters.

The agenda includes:
- Discussing the amount of money to be included by type of library in the GO Bond bill
- Reviewing the language of the bill relating to the supplemental nature of bond funding
- Preparing the overall strategy for the passage of the bill
- Identifying potential sponsoring legislators

This meeting will be held on Saturday, September 19th at the Belen Public Library, 333 Becker Ave. in downtown Belen, 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm in the library meeting room.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=333+becker+ave, Belen, NM 87002

For early arrivals, we will gather at Pete's Cafe, 105 N. 1st St, beginning at 11:00 am for lunch. Pete's is across the street from the Harvey House Museum, and two blocks east of the Library.

Note that this meeting overlaps the annual Fall workshop meeting of the Advocacy for School Libraries Special Interest Group, which will be held at Belen Middle School from 8:30 am through 1:30 pm. Belen Middle School is two blocks south of the Public Library, and we hope that some of the workshop attendees can join our meeting when their meeting concludes.

The Saturday Railrunner may be convenient for some, with the southbound 503 train arriving at 10:43 am, and the northbound 508 train leaving at3:58 pm. Although the station is close to the Harvey House, currently one must use the Reinken Ave. overpass to get to the west side of the tracks.
