Earthday: The story goes that Earth Day was conceived by Senator Gaylord Nelson and his assistant Dennis Hayes after a trip they took to Santa Barbara right after the horrific oil spill off our coast in 1969. They were so outraged by what they saw that upon returning to... Washington D.C., Senator Nelson introduced a bill designating April 22 as a national day to celebrate the earth. It was in the wake of this same tragedy that Community Environmental Council was born. Exactly one year after the oil spill, more than a thousand people attended a commemoration of the disaster — with speakers such as Paul Ehrlich, David Brower and Denis Hayes. A few months later, in April 1970, CEC opened the doors to its new office, and – along with several communities around the nation -- organized the first Earth Day. Earth Day celebrations faded away in the 1980s, but in 1990 CEC helped rejuvenate this important legacy -- organizing a large celebration on the 30th anniversary at Santa Barbara City College. Since 1990, CEC has hosted the event at various locations around Santa Barbara. CEC: 40 years of environmental leadership Since 1970, CEC has led the Santa Barbara region – and at times California and the nation – in creative solutions to some of the toughest environmental problems. We are often referred to as a “think-and-do tank” – deeply analyzing a problem and then applying creative, real-world solutions to it.
