Pende Mbangu mask (sickness mask)
Origin: Zaire
Circa: Early to Mid 20th Century
Materials: Wood, fibers, pigment
Provenance: Private New York Collection
Price : $3500
The Pende Mbangu is recognized by a contrast of black and white that separates the face and sometimes includes general distortion of facial features. The colo...r white symbolizes the spirits of the dead, in this case represents the hope of being cured of illness. The black pigment represents the sickness or illness that plagues one throughout life. The combination of black against white symbolizes this constant battle.
In Contrast to common sculptures portraying the ideal of health, and prosparity, these masks represent physical deformities caused by disease and mental illness.
The mbangu mask often represents a highly regarded hunter who has been affected with facial paralysis. Often considered victims of sorcery these ills can affect the most highly regarded citizens within a community. Individuals are said to be cursed by a rival who jealously inflicted him with disease. This mask teaches Pende audiences about the rewards of good behavior and the negative reprocussions of ammoral behavior. (Sources: To Cure and Protect)
