Drawings, 1954–58 brings together over twenty rare works by the Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica (1937–1980), a pioneer in Modernism and multi-disciplinary practice whose works-on-paper have not yet been exhibited independently. The exhibition features works from the artist’s three major drawing series: Grupo Frente, S...êco, and Metaesquema. Hélio Oiticica: Drawings, 1954–58 will be on view at Galerie Lelong from December 17, 2009, to February 6, 2010.
Oiticica's works form a bridge between painting and sculpture; furthermore, they connect the Modernist utopia of the 1950s with the more fractured period of social and political tensions of the 1960s and '70s. His revolutionary performances, sculptures, and installations—most notably, the series Parangolé, Bilateral, Relevo Espacial (Spatial Relief), Bólide, and Penetrável (Penetrable)—outline a cohesive, sustained investigation of color and abstraction as a framework for spatial experience. The delineation of architecture in two dimensions is most visible in his drawings.
From 1955 to 1956, Oiticica was associated with Grupo Frente, a group of avant-garde artists including Ivan Serpa, Lygia Clark, and Lygia Pape. Though Oiticica was still a teenager and the youngest member of the group, his Grupo Frente drawings demonstrated an intuitive response to color matched with rigorous discipline—a distinctiveness that would remain until his last works. The Sêcos (1956–57) establish Oiticica’s engagement with space as structure; in these he used color more economically, concentrating on symmetry and asymmetry. Years later, Oiticica’s Penetrables would make tangible the spatial relationships that are hinted at in the drawings. In the Metaesquemas (1957–58), with which viewers may be most familiar, he layers color in sharp precision, suspending the forms in a space that is perceived beyond the drawings’ borders.
The timing of the exhibition is made poignant by a tragic event: on October 17, 2009, a fire broke out at the Projeto Hélio Oiticica in Rio de Janeiro, including the storage facility where Oiticica’s works were kept. Though initial reports of the damages were devastating, it has since been deemed that a number of works can be restored. Hélio Oiticica: Drawings, 1954–58 allows the public unique access to the visionary basis of Oiticica’s groundbreaking work.
Concurrently, Oiticica's work is in group exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp; the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; and Haus Konstruktiv, Zürich; and in a collection display at the Tate Modern, London. He was also featured in recent exhibitions at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Netherlands, and the Seattle Art Museum. In 2007 and 2008, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Tate Modern presented the landmark retrospective Hélio Oiticica: The Body of Color. Oiticica's work is represented in the collections of both museums, as well as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro; Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona; Daros-Latinamerica, Zürich; and Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation, Miami; among others. The artist's estate is managed by the Projeto Hélio Oiticica, Rio de Janeiro, and represented in the United States by Galerie Lelong, New York.

An exhibition of monumental abstract paintings by Sean Scully, including a new series on aluminum, will be shown at Galerie Lelong. Described by many as the leading abstract painter of his generation, Scully transforms an almost dogmatic reference of the grid into a foundation for emotion, spirituality and poetry. Th...e exhibition will open to the public on October 30 and will remain on view through December 12, 2009. The artist’s reception, at which he will be present, will be held on Thursday, November 5, from 6 to 8 pm.
In his signature practice, Scully employs rigorous compositions of horizontals and verticals, fields of rich hues and brushwork, and a delicate balance of luminosity and shadow. The duality of structure and sensuality is an essential element for the artist, mirroring pervasive yet conflicting facets of human nature. Throughout Scully's works, rationalism and romanticism coexist.
Since the artist’s last show at Galerie Lelong in 2005, he has experimented in his large paintings with aluminum as a support. Using multi-part constructions, notably the triptych, the artist exploits the sharp edge of the metal against the fluidity of the paint. One of the most radical explorations of this material is in the painting LANDBAR, in which the aluminum is exposed as part of the painting and echoes the sensation of light in the landscape. In addition to this innovation, the current exhibition includes a number of significant paintings from the Robe series. The artist writes on these works:
"As in the ‘Pope’ paintings of Titian, I wanted to express something about how we assign transformative power to sacred and ceremonial robes. The repeated pattern of the painting is set in opposition and dialogue with the romance of its painting . . . I see it as luxurious and austere."
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue published by Charta Books, featuring 33 color illustrations and an essay by Tiffany Bell.
Scully's works can be found in over 80 public collections worldwide. His most recent retrospective opened at the MKM Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst, Duisburg in February this year and will open on October 23 at the Ulster Museum, Belfast. Currently the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin is organizing a retrospective that will open in 2010 and travel to the Kunstmuseum Bern; Lenbachhaus, Munich; Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin; and Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin. Scully was born in 1945 in Dublin and currently lives and works in Barcelona, Munich, and New York.
