Japan Society - Education Programs NEW RESOURCE: 2010 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Japan-United States security
agreement, but recently problems have surfaced as newly elected Prime Minister Hatoyama advocates a “more equal partnership” (taito na domei)
with the United States and has decided to rethink the plan to move the
Futenma military base, a... decision made in 2005 under the previous
administration. As Hatoyama’s cabinet has openly and publicly disagreed
about the correct plan of action, US government officials have
responded with worries of their own over the future of the US-Japan
relationship.

Japan Society - Education Programs Photo of the Waseda University baseball team in 1925 & link to essay by William Kelly about baseball from 1905-1935, the period bball became popular in Japan. Essay discusses concern by Ministry of Education and relationship between mass media and bball. Also included is a great quote in Asahi newspaper in 1911 dismi...ssing baseball as a "pickpocket's sport" where "players try to swindle their opponents and steal bases." How times have changed. From same article: "it is impossible for Americans to play a brave game like rugby, the national sport of the British, in which the players hang on to the ball even though their nose is being crushed and their skull dented."
