From “Guitar Hero” to “Orchestra Hero”

Saturday (10/31) on The New York Times online, Michael Gordon writes, “What is the hottest thing in music right now? A pair of video games—Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Anyone can play. The games allow you to become a member of the band. … So, why not Orchestra Hero? What if I could ...‘play’ the horn solo in ‘Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks’ on a ‘controller horn’ or the bassoon solo at the opening of ‘The Rite of Spring’ on a ‘controller bassoon’? What if I could bang out the timpani part in the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony or the clarinet solo at the beginning of ‘Rhapsody in Blue’? What if I could stand in front of the entire orchestra and conduct Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, or sit in the brass section for a rendition of Janáček’s ‘Sinfonietta’? The possibilities are astounding. And the good news is that Rock Band will soon be opening its format to classical music.”Read More

I've always thought of that idea! My husband plays guitar, but I play Oboe and would love for them to have an Orchestra hero game. But we like the Guitar Hero format better than Rock Band.

Flight of the Bumblebee would be another good idea because I know there is a song in a Guitar Hero game that has lots of fast notes like that.

Reporting from Vietnam: I stopped by to check out the Saturday-night scene in front of the Hanoi Opera House during the second of the New York Philharmonic’s concerts there. A live simulcast of the concert was being shown free of charge on large screens in front of the Opera House. I bumped into a guy from the U.S. Em...bassy, and we chatted about why the plaza was not shut off to traffic (long story short: bureaucracy here can be difficult). So, as soloist Frank Peter Zimmermann was winding his way through the Brahms Violin Concerto, motorbikes and taxis and supply trucks and buses whizzed around the plaza.Read More

League of American Orchestras Reporting from Vietnam: The crowd, while not screaming and yelling, clearly wanted more, and encores ensued. From Emanuel Ax, there was a Chopin Nocturne, and after the Seventh Symphony there was the scherzo from the Mendelssohn Octet arranged for orchestra. There were several minutes of rhythmic clapping after the Mendelssohn encore, so Gilbert came out once again, smiled, and plunged into the Egmont Overture.

League of American Orchestras Reporting from Vietnam: This warm and sticky but clear night featured the first of the Philharmonic’s two concerts here in Hanoi. The program: all-Beethoven (not counting encores), accompanied by appropriately sunny weather that made it easy to set up outdoor screens for people to watch the concert on, free of cost.
