In 1991, after the collapse of t...he Soviet Union, Cuba went through what’s been labeled “el periodo especial” or “special period.” It was an uncertain time but despite the difficulties, the people of Cuba remained passionate about life. They learned how to create beauty in everyday life, using ordinary and everyday objects. Join us for a discussion of the impact the special period had on Cuban literary, media, and visual arts, and Cuban society today.
Helmo Hernandez is the President of the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba; art historian and specialist in visual arts, theatre, and cultural policy and development; curator and critic. He is the advisor of the National Fine Arts Council and the National Performing Arts Council, Havana and an adjunct professor at the University of Havana and at the Superior Institute of Arts.
