Whole Foods Market NYC
"County of Kings" presented by Lemon Andersen.

Growing up in Sunset Park, Lemon Andersen’s favorite comfort food was his grandmother’s Sancocho – a delicious and hearty Caribbean soup. Whole Foods Market and County of Kings are teaming up to share Lemon’s story. Share yours with us.

What is your favorite comfort food? ...

Tell us about it on the Whole Foods NYC Facebook page and you will be entered to win a pair of tickets to see this season’s most critically acclaimed show, County of Kings, at the Public Theater.

For your chance to win tickets:

1. Post your best family recipe or comfort food to WholeFoodsNYC

2. Become a fan of the show on the County of Kings Facebook fan page http://www.facebook.com/pages/New-York-NY/County-of-Kings/125617177317

It’s that easy!

Grandma Mami’s Sancocho for the Soul

• 2 tsp olive oil
• 5 cloves of garlic
• 1 cup onion, sliced
• 1 cup green pepper, sliced
• 1/2 cup cilantro, sliced
• 1 can whole tomatoes
• 1 can tomato sauce
• 2 cans chicken broth, unsalted
• 1/4 cup white cooking wine
• 2 green plantains, diced in 1 inch slides
• 1 Large Ñame, cut in 2 inch cubes
• 2 White Yautias, cut in 2 inch slides
• 2 Large Yucas, cut in 2 inch slides
• 2 Large Apios, cut in pieces
• 2 Large Corn on the Cobb, cut in 2 inch slides
• Salt, Pepper and Oregano To Taste
• 1 lb. chicken
• 1 lb. beef
• 1/2 lb. Cooking Ham
• 1/2 lb. BBQ Sausages
• 1 lb. Beef Tail
• 2 large potatoes, diced

In a large pot heat the olive oil, add garlic, onions, green peppers, cilantro and cooked until the onions are transparent. Add the cooking wine and stir until the wine evaporates. Add the whole tomatoes, tomato sauce, salt, pepper and oregano to taste. Stir for about two to three minutes.

Add all meat except the chicken. You want to add the chicken at the end to avoid the chicken to separate from the bones. Stir on high two to three minutes until the meat is sealed.

Add the chicken broth and the same amount of water. Also add the corn on the cobb. Cover and cook on medium high for about 45 minutes. Stir ocasionally checking the meat tenderness. Add the chicken and continue cooking until chicken is cooked.

Reduce the heat to low and add all vegetables. Cover and cook in low heat until vegetables are soft.

Serve with white rice and tostones.

Critical Acclaim:

“The perfect off-Broadway piece… [Lemon is] a distinctive talent that makes words sing.” – New York Times
“The baddest badass at The Public.” – Variety
“Astonishing… Unequivocal street cred" – The Source.com
"More energy than any stage can contain." – New York Post
"Enthralling…A fast-moving, lyrical ode to Brooklyn.” – Associated Press

Featured as part of The Public Theater’s Under the Radar Festival earlier this year, Lemon Andersen’s County of Kings gives a tough, yet poignant autobiographical account of a good kid growing up in an unforgiving environment. Lemon’s on-stage memoir touches on young love, the birth of hip hop, slinging crack, ballet, stealing car parts, prison, and poetry as he takes the audience on an astonishing and surprising one-man journey toward self-discovery. Weaving hard-edged drama with urban poetry, the Brooklyn born and bred performer tells his coming-of-age story with profound honesty, compassion and humor. A true story of finding passion in the arts and finding one’s way, Lemon paints a vivid portrait.
