ReelDance In the final 4 minutes of Michael Jackson's complete Black and White video clip, Jackson, sans music, transforms from a black panther into a human, dances, and gradually loses himself in a maelstrom of destruction and unabashed eroticism. The provocative and controverisal clip clearly references Gene Kelly's Singing in... the Rain sequence, 1952 (see clip posted a few weeks back).

ReelDance Gene Kelly's modern tap style was largely inspired by prominent African Armerican dancers of the 1920's and 30's who can be attributed with the development and popularisation of the form. These dancers included Slap and Happy (Harold Daniels and Leslie Irvin), Stump and Stumpy (James Cross and Harold Cromer) and Bill '...Bojangles' Robinson. Here's a great early clip of Bill Rosbinson.

Bill Robinson's famous stair tap routine in Harlem Is Heaven (1932). His sound and beat are the most recognizable. So groovy. I could listen to it all day! When I can't fall asleep, sometimes I remember this scene instead of couting sheeps. ...

ReelDance Gene Kelly is remembered for his experimentation with lighting, camera techniques and special effects in order to achieve true integration of dance with film, and was one of the first to use split screens, double images, live action with animation and is credited as the person who made the ballet form commercially acceptable to film audiences.

ReelDance Busby Berkeley directed Gene Kelly in his first musical film, 'For Me and My Gal' (1942), also starring Judy Garland. Here's a clip from one of Gene Kelly's most famous films 'Singing In the Rain' 1952 which he directed and choreographed.
