Mrs H and I have been on holiday. It was awesome. And I now know how to say “where is the elephant?” in Thai. Also, I fired a real gun for the first time in my life. (I am confirmed in my opinion regarding firearms: they’re horrible. This...

That’s the full stop at the end of the first draft of the new book. I feel… Amazing. Lots of work still to do. It’s not ready for anyone actually to read yet or anything. But still. :)

The English language has no word which is specifically a contradiction. If we want to argue with a statement, we say “no, it’s not” or “yes, it is” or even “on the contrary”. The German language has “doch“. So for example: A: Well, I’m not paying for this. B: Doch. (”Oh, yes, you are...

Briefly, two things: 1. the scientists in the UAE/Climategate thing committed the fundamental email sin: they wrote in emails things they would not say on a postcard. Well all do it. We should not. Annoying though it is, we should encrypt, because email has a sense of privacy which is utterly false...

Taking a few seconds out from the rush to finish the new book… Why? Because of this. I know that the majority of the people who read these pagesare persuaded that Climate Change is a real issue. I also know that I will have very little luck changing the opinions of those who are not. ...

Yes, that’s the Hindenburg, and no, I do not believe it’s all over for bookshops. It does appear, however, that Borders has crashed again, only a few months after being rescued, and the flesh-and-blood booktrade is apparently losing money hand over fist to the online shops. On...

Digital divide over filesharing plans Digital economy bill proposals receive welcome from music and film, but anger from ISPs and privacy campaigners (It’s from the Guardian, by the way.) From my perspective, of course, the failure to include the term #batshit is a major failing, but that’s not wha...

Looking at #batshit in the wider context… On Thursday I waxed somewhat wrathful over the government’s plans for the creation of a #Batshit Tsar and Lord Voldemort’s Mandelson’s plans for copyright in the digital age. It was...

George Orwell was about 25 years off!

But seriously, congratulations (?) on the UK version of the USA PATRIOT Act. Now the government just needs to tack a snazzy name on it that instills a sense of nationalism. Your civil rights are going to be trodden on in no time at all!

This is, in a way, more insidious than the Patriot Act. It's all so commercial, so low-level, that it barely seems like a civil rights issue. I'm a big fan of the Open Rights Group and so on, but I find it hard to agree that broadband access is a basic human right. That may be because I am an old fart, or because I haven't thought about it enough yet. But that's not the issue...

Y'know, all this stuff is waaaay easier to read on my blog. Facebook seems to have formatting issues...
