Spring Carnival

The public is invited to attend Morningside Middle’s PASS Spring Carnival. Attractions include a dunking booth, games, jump castles, and an appearance by Charlie the River Dog. Enjoy performances by Pantasia Steel Band at 11:30 am and Adande African Drum & Dance at 12:30 pm. In addition, community representatives from the North Charleston Fire and Police departments will be present to offer safety tips.

Reggae Concert • Dream Merchants Reggae Youth Band

Relax at the cabana area and listen to the smooth sounds of reggae played by this young group of local musicians, ages 8 to 16. Their performance, titled Youth Selling a Dream, will feature covers and original compositions.

Award winning storyteller J’miah Nabawi presents The Global Village: Jump Talk, an interactive, multilingual program of stories, songs, and folktale games from around the world. Follow a young boy as he leaves his native African village to explore distant lands.

Art Quilt Trunk Show & Lecture

Local quilt artist, Dr. Marlene O’Bryant-Seabrook, weaves powerful stories and images into her quilts, which have been exhibited around the world. Join her for a trunk show of her unique creations and a lecture titled The Journey of an “Out of the Box” Fiber Artist.

6:00–7:15 pm} Master storyteller Tim Lowry will host Mayfest: a Medieval Fair, featuring stories of knights’ adventures, “tournament” games, a marionette show, and a Maypole.

6:00–7:30 pm} Tri-county school showcase, featuring R.B. Stall High School’s High-Stepping Marching Band, The Berkeley County Big Band, and Alston Middle School’s Arts Showcase.

6:00–8:30 pm} The Poetry Show at The Navy Base Memorial, featuring Madea Goes to Jail actress, Tamika Harper (aka Georgia Me); Abyss, from BET’s Somebodies; and local spoken word poets, Los the Host, Khalid, Marcus Amaker, Chyrra, and Jaha Knight.

7:30–8:00 pm} Presentation of American, tribal-style, belly dance by Callypso Rising Tribal Bellydance Troupe.

8:00 pm} Multi-Cammy award-winning variety band, Billy Scott & the Party Prophets, will present an exciting, evening concert. The group will get the crowd dancing with beach, blues, Motown, and oldies tunes.

9:00 pm} Fabulous fireworks over the Cooper River conclude the evening. Other attractions include children’s activities, inflatable jump castles, and hula-hoop demonstrations by Homespun Hoops. Bring blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy a great ending to this year’s Arts Festival! Food concessions will be available for purchase.

With three horn arrangements, 17 South delivers a huge and classy sound ranging from Motown and R&B covers to classic beach music and Top 40 hits. The band is a handpicked, all-star group of musicians from Charleston, SC that have played with everybody from The Temptations and Four Tops to Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Enjoy shag demonstrations by the Charleston Shag Club and dance the night away.

Reggae Block Party • Mystic Vibrations

The night rolls on from Classic Beach Music to Island Vibes straight from Jamaica. The four talented members of Mystic Vibrations play music that speaks of love, unity, and peace, and have performed with numerous reggae acts including Inner Circle, The Wailers, and Israel Vibrations.

Theatrical Ballet Performance • The Magical Mystery Tour performed by Charleston Ballet Theater

Hot off the success of its sold out run earlier this year, The Magical Mystery Tour is a journey through the massive songbook of The Beatles, featuring stunning dance interpretations of classics including Lady Madonna, Yellow Submarine, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and Penny Lane, along with a set list of over 20 more Beatles hits. Following the performance, guests will be treated to a live Beatles rock concert in the PAC lobby, performed by local guitar hero Eddie Bush and the band One Flew South.

Daron Stewart stars in this one-man play fused with jazz, blues, poetry and story that journeys through the life and work of Harlem Renaissance poet, Langston Hughes. In a study room, Langston reflects on his childhood, his most signature poems, and his notable achievements through his writings. The event will also feature an exhibition of original paintings and poetry by Clyde Washington of the Inspirational Art Gallery. Washington, who grew up in Liberty Hill in North Charleston, now lives in New York.

Dwight Kemper, Master of Mystery and published mystery novelist, will host an interactive presentation of the zany mystery, Murder in Mind. Participants become deranged mental patients with unique phobias who all feel compelled to confess to the murder of their psychiatrist. Comic fun ensues as the mystery is solved. Seating is limited. Ticket packages include dinner, performance, gratuity, and parking pass.

The Josh Padgett Quartet (jazz) and musician Pete Ledbetter (acoustic Piedmont blues, folk, and swing) will provide outdoor entertainment throughout the evening. Enjoy live demonstrations of various graffiti art techniques, including wheat pasting, aerosol art, and stencil art, by local artists including Meta, Proton, Egroe, and House. Join this dedicated musician and master guitarist for an evening of original Blues music. Mojo Collins has performed all over the country for 20 years and has released numerous albums.
