Why Equity Isn't Enough: Women Doing "Men's Work"
Presented by Dr. Mary Kirk
In the past 30 years women have grown from about 8% to 25% of th...e total number of physicians, but they still earn 64% of what their male peers earn. Meanwhile, a 2008 Business Week headline asks "Are There Too Many Women Doctors?" and students in over 50 years of draw-a-scientist studies still picture a white man with glasses in a lab coat. What's wrong with this picture and how can we change it?
Dr. Mary Kirk, author of Gender and Information Technology: Moving Beyond Access to Co-Create Global Partnership (2009), answers these questions by exploring why focusing on equity will not solve the problems of access, recruitment and retention of women and people of color in STEM education and employment. Kirk offers an interdisciplinary, social systems perspective on the challenges we face, and shares specific solutions for individuals and institutions committed to unleashing our full human potential.
Bio: Dr. Mary Kirk is a Professor in the Individualized, Interdisciplinary & Lifelong Learning department at Metropolitan State University where she also teaches gender studies. As a teacher, Kirk has been nominated five times for teaching awards at two universities and received Metropolitan State University’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2007. As a scholar, Kirk’s publications on women in science and technology include her book Gender and Information Technology: Moving Beyond Access to Co-Create Global Partnership (2009), a chapter in Goran Trajkovski’s Diversity in Information Technology Education: Issues and Controversies (2006), and articles in the Journal of Computing in Small Colleges and NWSA Journal.
