A NEST IN NATURE A RICE box is a wonderful sensory experience for children. They love the feel of the rice as it slides through their fingers. They pour and scoop and stir and mix. We also added couscous and lentils to our Rice box for alittle more drama :)

A NEST IN NATURE Feeding bread to wild ducks and geese is very bad for them. as well as the environment around them. Bread does not contain the proper nutrients for wild waterfowl. Hand feeding them diminishes their natural wariness of humans and some other predators, such as domesticated dogs. They can also become dependant on "easy" ......food and not migrate properly. High concentrations of waterfowl in a single location often pollutes the water and shoreline, contributing to the spread of disease in both the animals and humans. High amounts of fecal matter can make the water uninhabitable to fish.

A NEST IN NATURE
Find some water . . a pond, a beach, a lake, or even a sink! and let the children explore the water. Children also love to toss pebbles and rocks to see the ripples and splash.
If you see ducks or geese, watch them and enjoy them, but PLEASE DO NOT FEED THEM.

A NEST IN NATURE
It's time to bring Nature INSIDE for the children, especialy in the colder areas, before the winter winds blow and the earth gets blanketed with snow.
Go outdoors and collect natural materials together. The children will LOVE using their special finds in their block play, doll play , or perhaps just to use as is and k......eep it on their nature table. It's making that *connection* with the natural world that ALL children need.

A NEST IN NATURE The children made a *home*. Father Sun said he would give them a spark of the sun's rays to carry them through the long. dark. cold winter if they made a home for it. Next we will attach wire, add a tea light candle, and embrace the darkness :)

A NEST IN NATURE Keep a board on the ground on purpose. Lift it up now and then and discover what is there. Today we found a salamander and a worm :)

A NEST IN NATURE Children need to be IN the world. . . interacting and PLAYING. That is truly how they learn :)

Christine Gerzon is the epitome of a kindergarten teacher: warm and wise, quick to get down on her knees to wipe a tear or bandage a boo-boo. She can rhapsodize for hours about a single leaf and philosophize convincingly about the pedagogical uses of papier-mache. ...
