Ohio Dept of Ins Director Mary Jo Hudson is reminding drivers to be on the lookout for more deer on roadways and to check with their insurance agent to make sure they are adequately covered in the event that they strike a deer while driving.

Ohio law requires that children under four years old and under 40 pounds must ride in a car seat or booster that is appropriate for the child's age and weight. The Hoffman Group Teenagers with their own cars or free use of one are much more likely to get in crashes than those who share a car. And crashes are much less common among teens whose parents set clear driving safety rules. The findings are in two studies by researchers at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and funded by State Farm Insurance Co. They are in the October issue of Pediatrics.

In fact, 69 percent of parents of teen drivers said they practice at least two dangerous or distracting behaviors while driving and 49 percent admit to practicing at least three behaviors.

The insurance industry is a key player in Ohio's economy, according to the Ohio Insurance Institute (OII). With 261 insurance companies located there, Ohio is a top state for industry employment with close to a $6 billion payroll, according to a new report released by the OII.

March has the lowest rates, followed by February. Researchers hypothesize that October, November, and December are more dangerous than other months because of the duration of darkness, which increases in the fall and is longest in late December

The Hoffman Group Speed was a contributing factor in more than half of teen-driver crashes in Ohio, the State Highway Patrol said today. That's just one of the not-so-surprising revelations in a three-year study of statistics from 2006 to 2008. The patrol found that teen drivers caused 61,784 traffic crashes during that time. The result: 212 deaths and 27,838 injuries.
