Mia Fern

Mia Fern I know that the fire service are sometimes asked to attend at an rtc where a person is still in a vehicle, but why are they not called automatically to all rtc's, as the other day i was at an accident where there was oil and other fluids over the road, it wasn't until one of the cars started smoking that the police on scene radioed for the fire service to attend wasting time and putting people at risk.

Hi Mia, We always attend rtc's to assist in the removal of casualties trapped if the ambulance Paramedics require assitance. We are also called to many rtc's where the Paramedics only need assistance in moving a casualty to an ambulance/air ambulance. If no one is trapped we are not automatically called as the police can often deal with liquid ... Read Morespills with their own spillage kits. It does depend on the situation at the time and whether the Police Officer on scene considers they need our assistance. This case sounds like they were concerned that the vehicle was about to catch fire, which is not actually that common in minor rtc's.
