Backstage was launched in June 2007 in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s commercial capital, by Otara Gunewardene, founder and Chief Executive Officer of ODEL, the country’s iconic lifestyle department store that has been compared by visitors from overseas to Harvey Nichols and Harr...ods. Backstage has grown to seven outlets in Colombo and the suburbs, one of them a standalone store at Crescat, the city’s cosmopolitan shopping mall. Backstage in concept is a theatre-themed retail avenue offering women a vast range of high quality fashion accessories in an extensive range of lines and sub brands, at surprisingly affordable prices. All Backstage standalone stores and outlets are designed to provide a unique ambience for accessory shopping where shoppers can try on accessories in spaces designed to make them feel like they are literally ‘backstage’ and preparing to go out on show. In Singapore, the first Backstage outlet is at Illuma, Bugis Junction, described as Singapore’s next arts and entertainment shopping central. Backstage opens its second outlet in Singapore at Orchard Central at the end of May 09. Backstage stores are the first to offer shoppers a glamorous and exciting shopping experience with its theatre-themed décor. ‘Backstage props’ such as multiple mirrors, bulb-encrusted vanity mirrors, lip shaped stools and bright pink trimmings are incorporated in the store setting to create the dramatic ambience unique to its name.
