I recently had the opportunity to speak to the Voinovich School's Scott Miller about the University Clean Energy Alliance of Ohio (UCEAO). This innovative group, which has been in the works since 2006, is dedicated to advocating for clean energy research and education, informing policy-makers, bringing together researc...hers and business leaders, and focusing Ohio energy research on job creation. Ohio University has been involved with the group since the first meeting – OU is one of UCEAO’s 15 founding members and Miller is the group’s current Chair of the Board.Read More

UCEAO... Read More’s work is inspiring in its efforts to create partnerships and improve business and research practices. I am amazed that I had not heard much about UCEAO prior to this interview, because the organization is making unprecedented strides in bringing together Ohio’s many higher education institutions. It is important for researchers to combine their efforts, because our state offers a wide range of advanced energy research opportunities. Please read more about the group at: http://www.uceao.org/

Public and nonprofit leaders operate in complexity. Leaders are required to strategically manage diverse stakeholders, politics, service delivery systems, resources, advances in technology, competition, and new avenues for collaboration.

These demands req...uire a new kind of leadership: One that positions executives as change agents who use strategy to create public value. The Ohio University Executive Leadership Institute (OUELI), presented by practitioners, thought leaders, and Ohio University faculty, equips leaders with tools and concepts on value, the heart of public and nonprofit organizations.

Through an interactive set of presentations, group activities and case studies, participants concentrate on four key areas:

- value creation – identify how to fulfill the organization's mission in a manner that best meets public needs;

- political management – manage stakeholder expectations to ensure access to necessary resources and authority;

- operational capacity – acquire the capacity, skills and partners to successfully accomplish identified goals; and

- performance measurement – measure the organization’s performance and use data to advance strategy.

As the ARC States' Co-Chair, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland gave a talk at this week's conference opening. He spoke about his vision to make Ohio a global leader in developing and supplying the next generation of energy technologies to the world. The Appalachian region is critical to reaching energy independence in our n...ation because of the region's history of fueling energy-related growth in America. The governor said there is no place in the world "where the work ethic is stronger than here in Southeast Ohio."Read More

Although Gov. Strickland acknowledged that the state and region face great challenges, it was reassuring to hear his confidence in everyone assembled at the conference. Often times, the subjects of Smart GRIDs, wind energy and minimizing emissions seem to evoke more pessimism than optimism. However, the governor's certainty that the goals can be ... This morning’s ARC conference panel on “New Ventures in the New Energy Economy – Growing Green Entrepreneurs and Jobs” was another eye-opener. Moderator David Wilhelm, a visiting professor at the Voinovich School among many other achievements, really stressed how Appalachia really has an advantage over other areas of t...he country that have been severely affected during our current economic downturn. I liked the juxtaposition of old traditions in the region (farmers market, agriculture, coal, etc…) with the seemingly endless options of how to embrace a new energy economy. Wilhelm was joined by fellow panelists Neill Lane (Cooling, Inc. in Athens, OH), Dale Freudenberger (FLS Energy in Ashville, NC) and Brandon Minix (Midwestern Biofuels in Kentucky), each who spoke about their green energy-conscious businesses and the advantages of operating out of their respective Appalachian location.Read More

(con't) I am continually amazed each time I learn about a different Appalachian business that is succeeding in our current economy, as well as making a positive impact on our environment by being involved with new energy development. (On a side note – an ARC conference participant from Virginia informed me that Ohio University has extremely nice and helpful students who were always willing to point a lost conference member in the right direction. Way to represent, fellow students of OU!!)

I attended yesterday morning’s sessions of the Appalachian Regional Commission conference, which included information on “Growing Green Enterprises,” “New-Energy Education and Training Programs,” “Energy-Efficient Infrastructure: Buildings,” and “Wind-Powering Appalachia.” On one of the panels, Melinda Richter, Executi...ve Director of the Environmental Business Cluster, offered advice on how to build a Clean Technology incubator for start-up businesses.

“There is a need for more conversations between innovators, financiers and policy makers,” she said. “We have a lot of work to do to make this industry all it can be, but there is a huge opportunity.”

Many of yesterday’s panelists made great suggestions, from tapping into younger generations to constructing more efficient buildings. As a student, I found the points about including young people in green developments to be particularly compelling – I hope the conference attendees will make use of all of these great ideas!
