March Gardening Tips
Here are some tips to help ensure your plants come through the winter and are ready for new spring growth. Water all plantings, especially those put in the ground last year. Soak the root zone now that the ground has thawed. Check mulch depth aro...und hydrangeas, azaleas and other tender plants like Pieris. Add mulch around the base of the plant if less than two-inches deep. Mulch other areas one to two-inches in depth to protect plants from cold, early spring weather. Mulch also helps the soil retain moisture and slow weed growth. Cut back grasses to three-inches before the dead stalks shatter and new growth emerges. Remove all dead foliage from perennials. Apply pre-emergents like Treflan or Preen to garden areas to inhibit the germination of weed seeds. Read package labels to make sure these chemicals are compatible with your plant varieties.
