If you have ancestors who settled in New Netherland (now New York) in the 1600s, you will undoubtably eventually find yourself struggling with Dutch words and handwriting. You may even venture into research from the Amsterdam Archives Church Records which have been microfilmed.

Yvonne,

You asked about alternate lists for Galveston. You didn't specify a year of arrival, but as you probably know, the Great Galveston Hurricane of September 1900 destroyed much of the city, including the buildings that housed the immigration records. There are very few records surviving between 1871-1894. Is this when your people arrived? There are a few surviving lists in that time period.

If it was 1846-1871 Quarterly Abstracts are the only passenger lists available and are on microfilm

See the list of what is available at

http://www.thegenealogyspot.com/ShipsLists-Online/usa/texas.html

If they sailed to NY and disembarked to switch ships, their names should be on a passenger list of the ship arriving in NY. If they continued on in the same ship, their names would be on the list in the arrival port of Galveston.

How do I find alternate ships list to Galveston, TX. Most list to at Galveston have been lost.

If they changed boats in New York would they be listed some where in New York? Family story says they did not go ashore.

Donna - you asked about your Gambles years of immigration. Have you found them in the various census years? What is the earliest date you have found them in Ontario? Did you check assessment and tax records?

Land records? The first thing most settlers did was purchase land.

This might be some help for land records - http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/land.shtml

Looking for Bodine ancestors who ended up in Delaware, USA; could be from New Jersey and/or Maryland. I have some info already but would love to find out if they are related to the Jean Bodine from France Heuguonot ancestry.
