The top honor was awarded to the newspaper staff for an editorial titled, “Why Isn’t It Date Rape.” The second-place award was given to Brandon Townsel, a sophomore from Flint, for his sports photo from a wrestling competition. Nicole Babcock, a 2009 graduate from Three Rivers, received an honorable mention for her editorial critiquing the college dress code for athletics.

The contest was open to student newspaper members of the MPA and was cosponsored by the Michigan Collegiate Press Association, an organization composed of advisers to MPA student newspaper members. The newspapers competed in one of three divisions, including: Division I (papers published more than weekly); Division II (papers published weekly); and Division III (two-year college publications or schools publishing less than weekly). Entries included editorial content, design, photos, general excellence, advertising sections and online editions.

The Echo has received 13 awards in the past three years from the MPA.

Olivet College Admissions Olivet College announces highest undergraduate enrollment in school history Sep 23, 2009 With 427 new students, Olivet College’s fall undergraduate enrollment stands at 1,126. It is the highest undergraduate student body total in school history, according to an announcement by Larry Vallar, vice president for enrollmen...t management.

“We are excited to see a positive trend in enrollment numbers over the past few years,” Vallar said. “In addition to sustaining those high numbers, we are attracting quality students with higher academic credentials. Though we have become more selective, we continue to align with our mission of supporting students who ‘are not rich in this world’s means’ by providing more than $8 million in institutional aid.”

Olivet’s fall enrollment has surpassed the 1,000-student plateau for six consecutive years. Enrollment continues to increase substantially, thanks to improved facilities, programs, and recruiting and retention efforts. During the past year, the college has introduced several new academic majors, minors and concentrations, including an insurance claims investigation minor, music major with a concentration in musical theatre, and learning disability teacher certification. In addition, the college has completed several building and renovation projects on campus in the past two years and plans to break ground on the new M. Gorton Riethmiller Art Building in October. Recruiting efforts have also improved, thanks in part to the implementation of the Olivet College Community Connection Grant, which significantly reduces the cost of tuition for area students.
