Wiki wiki wiki… why would you?

Of all the Web 2.0 tools wikis seem to be one of the most accessible and practical…and free or cheap to get started. Except that there are more stories of moribund sites that seemed such a good idea than of the vibrant, participative, multi-media, collect...ively authored, strategically significant resources that wikis promise. And the likes of wikipedia, appropedia, wikitravel, wikimapia and others show us what can be done. Some organisations have simply got on with it, looking at the challenges they face in collaboration, knowledge sharing or coordinating projects over distance and selecting a wiki as a way of addressing at least part of their problems.

Healthlink has always used communications tools strategically, and they have recently begun use wikis. Come to the next Peer Exchange and learn how they are getting on, share your own stories and think through whether you can exploit their flexibility

One World UK Peer Exchange If your audiences join your campaigns on Facebook, look for your jobs in LinkedIn, find your research on Google Scholar, register to your events at upcoming.org, view your videos on YouTube and find out about your organisation on Wikipedia, what function does your corporate website serve?

In this peer exchange, Nick Sco...tt of the Overseas Development Institute will present some examples of how his organisation is preparing itself for a world where odi.org.uk may no longer be that important anymore, and offer his view on the particular challenges and opportunities this presents for a research-based think tank.

Price: Only £35 for Partners (£50 non-partners).
Venue: OneWorld UK, CAN Mezzanine, 32-36 Loman Street, London SE1 0EH

One World UK Peer Exchange This announcement should be a video clip, produced participatively at a major event, using mobile phones, in a non-European language, with sub-titles and a blinding open-source sound track. The reason we are all using video, of course, is because it is such a compelling communications medium - and because web 2.0 makes... it so easy to produce, share, link and syndicate.

Oxfam GB has been using video online since it was first possible, professionally produced and edited material as well as, more recently, smaller-scale, more direct media. Emily Subden has been leading the video work of their e-campaigns team and will present some of the work they have done, as well as examples from other NGOs, sharing learning on equipment, format, styles, host sites and impact.

Come and share your own ideas at the next OneWorld Peer Exchange - and send us links of videos you think we should all look at.

This month's topic:

Cool Tools for Non-Profits 1 - Communicating from Events

ShoZu, Twitter, Ustream, Flixwagon, Dapper, Fire Eagle, Qik, Dopplr – come on, kee...p up!

But the tools, of course, are only important if they add value to our communications. Live reporting from events - UN conferences, workshops, seminars - has recently become more popular, as well as both easier and harder.

Easier in that it's now possible for even the smallest organisations to engage their supporter in remote events through good-quality, real-time multi-media communications streams using some of the newer tools; harder in that it has become more difficult to stand out from the communicrowd and, at the same time, still one of the quickest ways to turn off supporters is to drown them in too much content.

This month it's OneWorld's turn to introduce the topic, describing its plans to provide meaningful, engaging, rich-media reporting from the Poznan conference next week without driving away the media bloated.

Bring your own examples of how you are using new and old tools to bring people closer to the work you are doing, while you are doing it.

Price : £35 for partners
£50 for non-partners
