Out of Mao's Shadow

Eliseo Sasso

Eliseo Sasso Hello,

I am an italian student and I would like to translate some passages taken from the book "Out of Mao's shadow" by Philip P.Pan from English to Italian for my final exam. That's the reason why I need to know if the translation rights have already been sold in Italy. I must add that I don't intend to do it for money. There is someone here that could help me?

Thank you

Sasso Eliseo

Lou Allora

Lou Allora Phil, congratulations on the book. I've spent a lot of time in Shanghai over the past couple of years for work. Can't wait to get into your book.

Karen Wen Lin

Karen Wen Lin we could start with step 1, start taking down his picture from Tian an men square already!

Juice

Juice As a student beginning to study Mandarin I was thrilled to find a book that gave me a deeper insight into the current economic and political issues in modern China. I want to thank you, Phil, for all the time and energy you put into conducting interviews and research in such a vast country while overcoming the challenging language barrier. I'm thankful to now have a better understanding of China's development from an insider's perspective- and I believe this book is a crucial stepping stone towards a global understanding of China. Good luck with all of your future endeavors!

Tiy Chung

Tiy Chung Hey Phil, Congratulations on the book. I've been waiting to read this ever since you got posted to Beijing... still waiting. Had my hands on a copy when it got released in Sydney but foolishly put it down. It's hard to find now, but I'm looking. Although I probably could just tap my feet and wait for the paperback edition I guess. If it is anything like the reporting you were pumping out of China it's going to be well worth the wait. Hope you're enjoying the Moscow summer.

Out of Mao's Shadow
Just a few odds and ends to report from Moscow: * The New York Review of Books has calledOut of Mao’s Shadow “one of the most revealing books about China since it opened up to the outside world in the 1970s.” Richard Bernstein’s kind piece in the March 26 edition here discussed my profile...
Out of Mao's Shadow

Out of Mao's Shadow More on the struggle over recent Chinese history and Zhao's secret memoirs in the Far Eastern Economic Review.

Source: www.feer.com
In a memoir released this month, a late former senior Communist Party official provides a unprecedented insider’s view of the brutal opaque party politics in China’s march toward economic and political reforms during the late 1970s and 1980s.
Out of Mao's Shadow

Out of Mao's Shadow The battle over history continues. Zhao's funeral is described in the first chapter of Out of Mao's Shadow. Now his secret memoir has been published.

Source: www.washingtonpost.com
Zhao Ziyang violated one of the central tenets of Communist Party doctrine: He spoke out. But it is only now, four years after his death, that the world is hearing what he had to say.

Zhang Wei

Zhang Wei BTW, are there any other way to buy the book.....? can not wait to see...

Zhang Wei

Zhang Wei Hi, Phil, how are you in Moscow? If I want to get the book I guess I need to ask someone to bring one from U.S. since amazon did not offer delivery to China, I think it must be fantastic...I will graduate very soon in the coming June and is looking for job now, hopefully we can meet someday in China :)

Vincent Pan

Out of Mao's Shadow
I have refrained from blogging during the Olympics, in part because I’ve been sharing my views in a series of interviews intended to promote Out of Mao’s Shadow.  This is basically my last media push; I’ll be cutting off the book tour and going to Moscow next week — earlier than scheduled,...
Gus Jian Zhu

Gus Jian Zhu I so have to back to beijing early to buy this book, or from the US. For the first time I can inspect a relatively comprehensive view of china in a skilled and sophisticated American journalist's eyes. Believe it would help me to learn more about beijing in an international concept.

Out of Mao's Shadow

Out of Mao's Shadow Zichen, the book is available in at least one English-language bookstore in Beijing, so maybe you can pick it up there. Only the first chapter is on the Internet. The other excerpts are much shorter versions of the originals. Good luck!

Wang Zichen

Wang Zichen it's a great job, though I've so far no access to the original work in mainland China.I read several chapters on the Internet.Though quite acquainted with the stories,I couldn't know more of them without reading this book. However,I do not think the title "out of mao's shadow" is very good.

Out of Mao's Shadow
Here’s the latest review, a kind one from the influential Michiko Kakutani of the New York Time
Out of Mao's Shadow
I’ve been trying to spread the word about the book, and thanks to the folks at Simon & Schuster, I have been a guest on ten radio talk shows so far — in New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Albuquerque and, as of today, Dallas...
Out of Mao's Shadow
In my book talks and interviews, I’ve often used the Communist Party’s response to the Sichuan earthquake as an example of why it has been able to stay in power.  Now there’s a new twist in the story...
Cindy

Cindy Buy this book! I finished it in two days because I couldn't put it down, it was that kind of good. The writing is engaging and the stories are compelling. It hurts your heart to think of how the Chinese people have suffered and been abused by their leaders; it inspires you that the Chinese people have the courage and strength to stand up, over and over, and speak out. This book is a must-read for those interested in Chinese politics and society specifically, and for those interested in political systems generally.
