Bu Zhong I am assigning this book to my students, will share our class blog link here later.

Weiyuan Hi Phil, I bought the book in the States and brought it with me to Switzerland. I read it in one day- not only because some stories are already familiar to me, but because it is absolutely riveting. P.S. I loved the new cover!

Brian Sounds like I must read it, then.

Eugene L Meyer Congratulations, Phil. I'm looking forward to reading this. Isn't Facebook amazing?

Gustavo Nogueira Just finished reading the book. It left such a deep impression on me that I hurried to the internet to read more about it - and found this FB page. Fascinanting and enlightening account of life in today's China. It's approach, centering on the stories of a few selected people who try to make a difference, makes it part...icularly resonating. At the very least, it has certainly added some "off the beaten track" attractions to my next trip to China, like the Cultural Revolution cemetery in Chongqing!

Angeline Just started the book today, and couldn't put it down. I haven't read a good book in a while and certainly enjoying this current read.

Janet Vandenabeele This has become my Book Next to Acquire!

Charlie Zongxiang Wang Spectacular

Junaid Ahmed I would love to read this book.

Gilberto Calderin I'm a freshman at high school and i have read " Out of Mao's Shadow " as a school requirement. Therefore, this book is being read all over my school. What i have to say is that this is an amazing book to read and i recommend it to anyone to undertsand and learn from it as well. Philip P. Pan is an inspiration to me and... a motivation to becoming a journalist myself.

Joseph Kruzich This is a very good book and highly recommended. In reading this you find inspiration for the cause of reform in China, and the number of brave Chinese that are fighting for it in their daily lifes. China is a very complex country and this book captures all of that complexity and doesn't reduce all of the challenges f...acing China and its people to black and white frameworks, which happens all too often in the discussions about China.

Jacob Long Live Communism Down With Capitalist Oppression

Peter Shay Whether or not you love or hate Beijing, I recommend reading "Out of Mao's Shadow" by Philip Pan, a fascinating grouping of stories that marvelously describe the complexity of present-day life in Beijing.
