Outstanding in the Field
Outstanding in the Field is a mobile restaurant without walls. Our seasonal farm dinner events are organized as a celebration of place and honor the farmer and other producers of a region.

Outstanding in the Field

Outstanding in the Field Host Farmer: Jered Lawson and Nancy Vail, Pie Ranch
Guest Chef: Peter Armellino, The Plumed Horse, Saratoga

Outstanding chefs love the annual foraging dinner. Not only do they get time out of the restaurant kitchen they get to tromp around where the wild things are. Peter Armellino of The Plumed Horse does the kitchen ho...nors. He has a lot to work with as late November is prime time for a range of fresh forest goodies.

Outstanding in the Field Host Farmer: Tim Willms, Talus Wind Ranch
Guest Chef: David Sellers, Amavi, Santa Fe

We make our first visit to New Mexico, one of America’s most beautiful states. Farmer Tim Willms of Talus Wind Ranch in Galisteo, New Mexico raises lamb and rare heritage birds. Chef David Sellers of Amavi will prepare a feast to match t...he scenery. A portion of the proceeds from the event will go to Kitchen Angels, a Santa Fe non-profit that provides nutritious meals to home-bound individuals. We’re excited to make this connection with such a great local organization for our New Mexico debut.

Outstanding in the Field Host Farmer: Ross Martin, La Plaza Cultural de Armando Perez Community Garden (Host Gardener)
Guest Chef: Guest Chef: Jason Weiner, Almond Restaurant, New York City

Community gardeners are farmers too and we will have several city gardeners on hand to show all that grows in the five boroughs. We will set the table among ...the giant willow trees. Guest chef Jason Weiner joined us last year for a fantastic dinner out in East Hampton at EECO Farm. Our East Hampton chef Jason opened a place in New York City recently so it made sense to say ”Hey Jason, you want to do this in NYC?” So here we are.

Outstanding in the Field Host Farmer: Phil McGrath & the McGrath Family, McGrath Family Farm
Guest Chef: Tim Kilcoyne, The Side Car Restaurant, Ventura

Our host farmer Phil McGrath last joined us for a wonderful farm dinner at Coleman Family Farm in Carpinteria, California. Around the third course we had Phil get up from the table to describe hi...s own organic farm located just down the road. Now it is Phil’s turn to host a dinner. Our guest Chef Tim Kilcoyne of the Side Car restaurant in Ventura goes the extra distance to get the best of local ingredients. In this case he won’t need to go very far. Phil’s productive farm is located in Camarillo alongside US 101 and is easily accessible to enormous numbers of good food loving Southland residents. We will celebrate Phil’s productive fields.

Outstanding in the Field Host Farmer: Kelly Harding, Cherry Grove Farm
Guest Chef: Scott Anderson, Elements, Princeton

We have had so many people say “Come to New Jersey it’s beautiful”. After the hundredth time we started to listen. After all of that enthusiasm, it’s time to come and see the “Garden State”. Chef Scott Anderson of Elements will ...have lots of ingredients to choose from his neighbourhood farm: Cherry Grove Farm has grassfed beef and lamb, heirloom pork, free range eggs, farmstead cheese and plenty of veggies.

Outstanding in the Field Host Farmer: Ross Martin, La Plaza Cultural de Armando Perez Community Garden
Guest Chef: Josh Eden, Shorty's 32, New York City

While out on the town in NYC last year we somehow ended up having dinner at a great restaurant with an unusual name: Shorty’s 32. The menu was interesting the food was excellent. We were excited... about the restaurant and asked to see the chef so we could thank him. We chatted for a while about this and that curious about the name of the restaurant. At Shorty’s 32 the kitchen is elevated compared to the dining area. When Chef Josh came down the stairs it all made sense. Josh IS short. He also likes to know his farmers and producers. For our fifth visit to La Plaza Cultural Community Garden we will source our feast from both community gardens in the five boroughs and selected farms from outside the city. Last year it unexpectedly rained and we had to put together a last minute shelter. This year we already have a tent and it’s ready to go - just in case.

Outstanding in the Field Host Farmer: Jered Lawson and Nancy Vail, Pie Ranch
Guest Chef: Scott Youkilis, Maverick, San Francisco

Guest chef Scott Youkilis is psyched. He can’t wait to go out on that foraging trip. Master foragers Andre LaFleur and David Chambers will accompany Scott into the woods in the hills above Pie Ranch and together they w...ill find a menu. Whatever our band of explorers can’t find in the woods, Pie Ranch, a grower of fruits and vegetables, will have the rest. Dinner guests will be able to see first hand where everything comes from.

Outstanding in the Field Host Farmer: Toby Leaman, Wattles Farm
Guest Chef: Evan Funke, Rustic Canyon, Los Angeles

Hollywood dinner. They grow things for dinner here? Yes they do. Wattles farm is a productive community garden not too far from the ‘Walk of Fame’ and other noted tourist destinations. The sprawling farm/garden is surrounded by tall... trees; when you are inside where it is quiet and green it’s hard to believe you are so close to the ‘action’. Outstanding friend Toby Leeman presides over the garden and is a thoughtful knowledgeable host. Chef Evan Funke of Rustic Canyon restaurant, located not too far from the garden is our guest chef.

I was at this ranch with a friend last yr, and it was fabulous! took a tour of the farmers ranch, made friends from the 200 people that we dined with, and had a great time, that i will never forget! The whole experience was dynamic. We were even introduced and sipped wine with a local wine maker. What a thrill!!!
