While I was on holiday with the kids last week (basking in the British Sunshine no less), PLoS ONE introduced 3 new species of dinosaur discovered in Australia - Matilda, Banjo and Clancy (named after Banjo Patterson, composer of the song Waltzing Matilda and two characters from his works). Last week, we introduced three new species of dinosaur from the mid-Cretaceous, discovered in the Winton Formation in Australia: the ferocious, carnivorous theropod, Australovenator wintonensis and two giant, plant-eating sauropods, Witonotitan wattsi andDiamantinasaurus matildae. ...

Just to complete the Bentham story below, the editor-in-chief of the journal resigned http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/fos/2009/ 06/bentham-editors-resign.html
Source: www.earlham.edu
The editor-in-chief of an open access journal has stepped down from his post after learning that the journal accepted a fake, computer-generated article for publication. So has an editorial advisory board member of a second journal published by the same company, Bentham Science Publishers.

Ramy at 11:43am June 15
I can't really blame the editor-in-chief for this; although he did the right thing by resigning. Have they launched an investigation into how this article was peer-reviewed and passed?
Vivian at 6:38pm June 15
that Phil Davis - there are lots of bad journals - just because some of them happen to be open access says nothing

Spoof papers accepted by peer-reviewed journals, scary http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17 288-spoof-paper-accepted-by-peerreviewed -journal.html
Source: www.newscientist.com
A graduate student says that a journal that claims to peer review papers has agreed to publish his nonsensical computer-generated study – for a fee

Heather at 2:23pm June 11
I heard about SCIgen *ages* ago - I say good on the "authors for putting in the time to make and submit the spoof. I also get incredibly spammed by Bentham just because I support open access publishing models. The point was not to diss peer review, but rather the standards of the journal in question, and that they are just using so-called open access as a cash cow vanity publishing outfit. If such places get publicly embarrassed enough, one might hope their source of money might dry up.
Chris at 5:18pm June 11
Creators of SCIgen use it 4 yrs ago to automatically generate a "paper" that get into computer science conference but it get into "non-reviewed" track. This one at Bentham Science Publishers get thru peer review. Shameful
