Inspired by the beats of many a dark dancefloor, POoK “the man wiv big hands” has a style that grew roots in the underground Bristol and Welsh free party scenes. With 17 years experience his craft has been publicly mastered at some impressive events and venues cross the South of England.
Trained as a butcher and later as a chef, he no doubt gained dexterity for slicing, dicing and chopping…but we’re not talking cutting sheep into cutlets here, we’re talking breaks, filthy beats and more recently dubstep.
From the early days in punk bands playing guitar, bass and as frontman on vocals, his appetite for music switched to all things electronic with the onset of hardcore and jungle. His first DJ gig was a paid affair back in 1992 in Southsea, with his taste moving through old skool to progressive house before finding favourite ingredients in the chunkier, dirtier bass, breaks and techno.
Over the years the dancefloors have been moved with precision and the passion of a seasoned hedonist, twisting them into a throbbing mass of limb-jerking ass-shakers at the likes of Turnmills, The Gardenin Club, Orbital Bar, The Egg, SE1, The Volks, Concorde2 and the Hope. Now on the roster for Archangelbreaks playing at events like Synergy, We Love and Waveform he's also a regular with Slackers Convention in Brighton.
Back on the vocals, albeit his charismatic random wit and banter, for the past two years POoK has listeners tuning in worldwide for their weekly Wednesday night fix of breaks on the BeatrouteSessions on Brap.fm. With a dedicated fanbase that trust his taste and skills in serving up the new, the old and well-loved tracks in between, the show was recently short listed for nomination at Breakspoll ’09.
POoK decided to cook up a few new flavours and step it up a gear in 2009 to utilise his shiny new laptop and love of Tracktor Scratch Pro. Now playing for Freebass regularly at the Ocean Rooms in Brighton alongside James D'Ley and Loop De Ville, the Noise nights across London and crossing the bridge to play in Wales, you can expect to be shaking your arse to some filthy POoKed-up beats at a venue near you very soon….
