PPS Equity What do you think? Is PPS trying to force a strike, so they get their five day furlough and teachers get the blame?

I think our teachers have given the district plenty of feebes. Any time there is a budget crunch the teaching staff is the first to be blamed for the shortage. At the end of every year the budget discussions target the teaching staff costs. I wonder what would happen if there were no teachers to teach our children, who would they blame then? ... Read MoreHawaii teachers have 17 days of furlough and 8% pay cut. With what teachers have to put up with in the present economy and the demands upon their job they deserve a decent contract and the district needs to find funds and forget about a furlough. It seems that all the companies are holding their workers hostage these days and it is criminal.

PPS Equity Go figure... PPS defunds the music program at Jefferson several years back, and now comes a "hip hop high" charter proposal eyeing the vacant music wing. Why won't PPS provide comprehensive secondary education in N Portland?

My big complaint right now besides working without a contract is the new Nutrition Services decision of no longer giving a carton of juice at lunchtime to students who are allergic to milk. Instead they will get an extra piece of fruit. Hell, there is usually two frueit choices on the salad bar. I don't think this is t...reating kids with allergies fairly. Why can't they provide soymilk, ricemilk, or another nutritious alternative drink?Read More

One would think after all the hoopla over sever allergies an the milk product related maladies, the district would catch a clue. Besides, it's time to step up to what's going on now in diet and nutrition.

Considering that lactose tolerance beyond infancy is a genetic adaptation almost exclusive to humans of northern European descent, it's not just about allergy. Many, many non-white children cannot digest milk.

PPS Equity While teachers approach 500 days without a contract, senior PPS administrators spent last week downtown at the Hilton schmoozing the likes of Vicki Philips. Her message: Merit pay -- oops -- I mean, pay for performance!

I was hoping Vicki Phillips would go away and stay away. There are so many "experts" out there touting their ideas for better schools. Better schools would be a given if teachers could actually teach, have the materials they need to teach and the credit they deserve for teaching. Merit pay is a double edged sword. The favorites will rake it in... Read More, the hardworking deserving may be overlooked. If you don't think there are administators with "pets" think again. It would makes sense to evaluate and help struggling teachers. I'm all for giving teacher's a good contract. Shame on the district for dragging its feet. Show them the money.

PPS Equity Charles Hopson at Portland City Club (at about 14:39): " It is civil rights violation of the
worst kind in the city of Portland when based on race and zipcode
roughly 85% of white students have access to opportunity in rigorous college prep
programs, curriculum and resources compared to 27% of black students.
We are a better state than this. We are city than this."

Can we get some copy paper over to Boise Eliot. My friend just bought a box because her son didn't get a homework packet this week because they were out of copy paper. Such a crying shame.

Lakeitha...do you think $8,811 would be enough to buy copy paper for Boise Eliot? That's how much of the school's Title I money was left over at the end of the 2007/08 school year. For years, schools have had unspent Title I funds at the end of the school year. My guess is that they had money left over last year too.

Woodmere Elementary School in southeast Portland will begin charging
parents late fees when they pick up their kids more than ten minutes
after the final bell. For every each ten minute block after the first
ten, parents will be charged $5, the equivalent of $30 an hour.
Woodmere students are 57 percent non-white. Eighty p...ercent qualify
for free or reduced lunch, and 34 percent are English Language
Learners. Fox 12 reports that the district will study the program and
consider implementing it at other schools.

I know that this wouldn't have started in a higher SES school because the parents would go "squeaky wheel". the fact is that most parents are reliant on older children, friends, relatives and child care providers to pick up their kids. I used to have to have one provider pick up from the onsite afterschool provider. And if the 2nd provider had a ...
