PPS Equity Via Kenneth Libby: school board wore "Marysville" shirts with prominent Nike logos at their meeting tonight. If Nike is serious about supporting schools, they'd should take a stand for rebalancing corporate and individual taxes in Oregon, skewed against individuals and in favor of corportations for at least 20 years.

(Of course, paying taxes doesn't generate the branding opportunities that giving away t-shirts does.)

PPS Equity Does your kids' school have insufficient fire alarms or other life safety issues? You'll have to check for yourself by wading through a comprehensive facilities report:

What's the scoring scale here? Is there a header for criteria and low-high, etc.?

It's pretty opaque... not entirely sure how to interpret the reports, except that something like "Fire Alarm is Missing or Inadequate" seems pretty to be a pretty clear indication of danger to children.

It would be nice if some of the district's communications staff would spend a little time extracting fire safety data from these reports and putting them all in one place so we don't have to hunt.

PPS Equity Wha....?!? ten people working on fire alarm inspections and maintenance district wide... 12 (mostly senior) people working in "Community Ivolvement and Public Affairs." We're pretty good at glossy fliers, but what about life safety?

PPS Equity District finds money, drops furlough demand in teacher contract

blogs.wweek.com
One day after teachers from Portland Public Schools crowded a School Board meeting to protest not having a contract, the school district announced a major change in their proposal to teachers.

PPS teachers gave up 10 days for the district, why ask for more? This whole dynamic of business practices of late is causing a lot of havoc among the workers. It seems that the profits must be maintained at the expense of those most dedicated. And, what's this deal with the audit finding more money? Doesn't PPS know where all their money is stashed? For once, let's think about the dedicated educators who do the most work and stop hammering them with take-aways.

Pamela, the comments sections on local newspaper sites attract a lot of that kind of garbage. Willamette Week's not nearly as bad as OregonLive or the Tribune in that regard. At least on WW, the nasty, ill-informed idiots are countered by a fair number thoughtful, intelligent comments.
