Jeff Bennett is a respected leader in the internet world, Founder and COO of NameMedia, Inc., and a caring Dad. After several interesting discussions about the important role of digital media in children’s education today, I asked him if he would write a guest post which he kindly provided below...

I was saddened as I sat in a movie theater last weekend; well, “horrified” might be a bit more truthful. I can choose the movie I see, but I can’t choose the previews I’m forced to sit through...

Summer camp changed my life. The joy of summer at camp was so profoundly fulfilling it’s difficult to describe...

Here’s a short video I shot with a veteran parent….that is what I call one who has raised a teenager or two and lived to tell about it...

I must confess I never considered myself a “mommy blogger.” But the universe of writers and bloggers seems to want to put me in the mommy-blogger category, and when they put me in the esteemed category of “top ten” I guess I’m not going to quibble. I’m going to say thank you...

Parenting Teenagers I'm looking for reading recommendations for mother- daughter book groups. What do you recommend?

I’ve been riveted to the story of Emmie’s unwanted pregnancy on Motherlode, as I told you yesterday. As a blogger I’ve been responding to this dynamic drama with fascination because so often I have found the comments from readers on this New York Times blog to be harsh and judgmental...

Here’s a personal story from Emmie, who is a single 22 year old who is trying to decide what to do about her unwanted pregnancy. She’s not a teenager anymore, in fact, she is a college graduate soon to go to a prestigious graduate school...

Parenting Teenagers commented on their own note What is Your Teen’s Bedtime? It Matters…a Lot.

If your teenager is one of the few who actually gets the required nine hours of sleep, you can stop reading this now. For the rest of you, new research has highlighted some facts you need to know about...

We imposed a bed time on our daughter until her junior year. While her grades were still high (she has a 3.8 GPA), she sleeps like crazy through the day now. I hate that. She's gained 10 lbs in this year and is only 5 lbs lighter than me, her 42 year old mother. Her metabolism is all screwed up from it too. The problem is, if I don't get a ... Read Morereasonable amount of sleep, the whole house suffers so I can't stay up and police her bedtime because she'll just get up when I'm asleep. We did take her computer out of her room and she doesn't have a TV. She's also not allowed to leave her room (except to pee, of corse)...she can't play video games or hang out in another part of the house. When we go to bed she's in her room for the night. Sadly, she has a cell phone. There is onl so much I can do. I'm very strict and try to give in on things I can. She swore she was the only junior in HS with a bed time. I'm not surprised. I'm no longer shocked at what parents let their kids do now.

Thanks for sharing that, Carolyn. It is hard to manage teens' bedtime as they get older; it sounds like you are doing all you can to head her in the right direction.... keep at it...

Here’s another example of digital communication changing our world: your teens can now get health and sexuality questions answered via text messaging…and according to www.BetterHealth.com some of these resources provide accurate and objective information, but not advice...

Once again, Amy Jussel at Shaping Youth.org offers thoughtful commentary on the cultural messages your kids consume… and reading her blog has to get your juices flowing...

It was 2003 when I watched Joey Lawton walk up to the podium at the Acton-Boxborough Regional High School graduation. As I remember it he was barefoot, and his shorts and Hawaiian shirt were visible when his blue gown blew in the breeze...

I begin each day with Marianne Williamson’s “Miracle Thought for the Day” podcast. This spiritual and thought-provoking daily recording helps me stay balanced and focused on what I consider most important. Her recent entry “Letting Your Children Go” is one that you may enjoy as well...

In our ongoing examination of teenagers’ use of new media, we’ve had several articles* looking at the relevancy of these tools in the classroom. Parents may wonder about teachers who employ the use of Facebook or Twitter, encouraging their students to do the same...

This story that was shared on NBC is a poignant and powerful example of how an online community can connect people and even save lives. Enjoy.

I took some time off yesterday. This doesn’t happen nearly often enough; I am a tough task-master when it comes to working. But my college-student daughter is home with us for a brief 10 days before she takes off to Colorado to spend the summer, and each available moment is treasured...

Parents are too skeptical. In fact, you are 2 to 3 times more skeptical than teachers when it comes to seeing the value of the internet to your child’s education. Here’s new data that reflects the different perspectives teachers and parents have about what the internet teaches children...

The arrival of spring brings many opportunities for teens to celebrate at parties, proms and graduations. Parents want your teens to enjoy these special times, but history shows these celebrations can turn deadly in an instant...

Suicide; just the thought of it conjurs up an unimaginable sense of fear in a parent’s heart. It is difficult for many of us to imagine the pain of dealing with such an event, and yet many families and communities are left to endure it...

I don’t need to tell you getting summer employment this year is going to be tough for your teenagers. Adults are taking the jobs that college students often get, and college students are pushing out the high school students, making the domino effect the hardest on the youngest job seekers...
