Political Play: Getting Ahead as an Actor
This week: Rule #7 of Political Play in the Performing Arts: Loyalty (Sunday, November 1, 2009) There is one client that I had who one day in auditions turned and said to me, “I’m a loyalist.” And he’s been loyal to me and my career and I have returned in kind my devotion to him and the [...

Yeah...that's why I chose not to go the "academic route." From what I've observed, a lot of the teachers are crap. A lot of students I know at many universitites have been taught to stay regimented in one place and the end with "scene." As an intern, I was able to sit on a number of professional auditions and sadly a few of them also ended with "scene." I don't get it.

I totally get it. In Michigan there has been a lot of conflicts with various artisitic directors getting fired lately. Actors want to be loyal to a number of them around here, but we have to go where the work is. It makes it hard to stay loyal sometimes!

This week: “Careful the things you do. Children will see and learn.” (Sunday, October 25, 2009) Balloon boy. If you haven’t heard by now the alleged publicity punking of America then you must have been in a perpetual tech-week (sorry) or fixated on your Wii (oh, you need to get a life). Fam...

Hey Paul. I just found some scribbling in my copy of your book. Can I just take it to B&N for a clean copy or do I have to contact Random House?

It's pretty amazing how many people don't take this business seriously. And when I tell people I want to work in theater, people say things like, "Oh, so you planning on moving to New York or LA?" It's like, no people. Theater is a real business. Just because you want to work in the business does not mean you have to move to a huge city. There... Read More's regional theater everywhere and a lot of successful, working actors you don't necessrily hear about who are doing just fine. It's very frustrating - especially because my parents have this mentality.

Hey Paul...just read your blog about bitch-slapping actors. Such foolishness also exists in Lansing. I've actually found that community theater people are often more serious than the so-called professional actors around here because they're doing it for the love of the art and not simply trying to get rich or famous.
