Peaceworks EVERYONE LOVES A PARADE--WILL YOU JOIN US IN ONE THIS SATURDAY?

Peaceworks and our allies in the Columbia Peace Coalition believe that our desire for peace needs to be made visible at every turn. Being for peace isn't all about "protesting." Peace is a very positive idea, something to be celebrated. And a parade is a ...wonderful opportunity to remind our fellow citizens of our desire to end the wars and build a peace economy.

We invite you to join us in Columbia's largest annual parade, the MU Homecoming Parade, this coming Saturday morning, Oct. 24. We will assemble between 8:45 and 9:15 a.m. approximately midway on the block of Rollins Road between Providence Rd. and Maryland Ave. We are Unit #90 in the parade. Our contingent is a walking and bicycling contingent. If you come by car, please come early to leave time to find parking and to walk to the form-up location. There may be parking in the Turner Ave. Parking Garage just a block north of Rollins, but if you come on the late end, the garage could be full.

We are interested in knowing approximately how many participants to expect, so we know how many banners to bring. If you plan to join the peace contingent, please call Shelly at 573-875-0539 or e-mail her at shelly@midmopeaceworks.org.

Peaceworks All are invited to join Peaceworks for our third Summer Salon of 2008.

What? Dinner, socializing, participatory discussion
When? Sunday, August 24, 5:30 p.m.
Where? Peace Park

Discussion focus: Elections and progressive politics.

TOPIC: How do progressives relate to the election of 2008 in particular and electoral politic...s in general?

Noting that Peaceworks is an educational non-profit and does not participate in the electoral arena, we thought it would be useful to discuss the state of our body politic.

What can we expect to see from the Obama and McCain campaigns? What do we think are likely outcomes of the presidential election, and of elections down ticket?

Given possible outcomes, what sorts of situations might we find ourselves in vis-a-vis war and peace, foreign policy, the economy, global climate change, nuclear power, renewable energy, etc., etc.

Additional Questions: How do we see the choices facing the voters being framed and presented? What this will do to public perception of critical issues? And how might we be most likely to move forward our issue concerns in 2009 and beyond under various outcome scenarios?

Please bring a blanket or lawn chair if you'd like and your own table service if you can. If it's rainy, we'll meet at the Peace Nook.

Peaceworks Noted author and sustainability activist, Harvey Wasserman, will be the keynoter at this year's Sustainable Living Fair. Join us for his presentation.

More about Wasserman:
Free Press Senior Editor and "Superpower of Peace" columnist Harvey Wasserman is author or co-author of a dozen books including SOLARTOPIA! Our Gree...n-Powered Earth, A.D. 2030; Harvey Wasserman's History of the U.S.; and, A Glimpse of the Big Light: Losing Parents, Finding Spirit.

With Bob Fitrakis, Harvey has helped expose the theft of the presidency. Their freepress.org coverage has prompted Rev. Jesse Jackson to call them "the Woodward and Bernstein of the 2004 election." Their books include How the GOP Stole America's 2004 Election & Is Rigging 2008, and What Happened in Ohio?, coming soon from the New Press.

Harvey's widespread appearances throughout the major media and at campuses and citizen gatherings have focussed since the 1960s on energy, environment, peace, justice, U.S. history and election protection.
In 1968 Harvey helped found the legendary anti-war Liberation News Service, and then Massachusetts' communal/organic Montague Farm, now home to the Zen Peacemaker Community, International.

In 1973 he helped pioneer the global grassroots movement against atomic reactors, then helped organize mass demonstrations at Seabrook, N.H., and New York City's 1979 "No Nukes" concerts and rally, featuring Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, CSN, James Taylor and others. In 1994 he spoke (for Greenpeace) to 350,000 semi-conscious rock fans at Woodstock 2.
Now based in Ohio, Harvey works to replace the Perry and Davis-Besse nukes with renewables and efficiency, and has helped his friends shut a trash burning power plant, a proposed radioactive waste dump, the Zimmer and Perry 2 nukes, a refuge-threatening housing development and a McDonald's. With Minnesota wind power pioneer Dan Juhl, he co-authored Harvesting Wind Energy as a Cash Crop: A Guide to Locally-Owned Wind Farming (http://www.danmar.us/), and is working with Farmers Green Power in Ohio and elsewhere to promote farmer/community owned renewables.

Harvey is married with five daughters, two grandchildren and a grand niece. The Solartopian Superpower of Peace, he says, can triumph over the evil forces of the Bush Junta.
