Why is it smaller airports do what larger airports should? Raced through Reno Airport today, headed for SFO. No lines. Banks of phones w/free local & toll-free calls. Charging stations for laptops & phones. Free Wi-Fi for all and plenty of seating. And at the TSA--no lines, many lanes open, and pleasant officers. I did...n't win at blackjack, but I did get lucky at the Reno Airport--other airports should take notice.Read More

When you grab the luggage & run-that's when thieves win. Once you're home and discover something missing, it's too late. Your word against the airline-and you lose. Please if you must check bags, make a list of what's in the bag and keep it with you (esp. at holiday time when traveling with presents). Open your bag at ...baggage claim & make sure everything is there before you leave the airport-it's your only protectionRead More

If you've been reading stories of people stealing airline bags, it's more proof that there are only 2 kinds of airline bags: carry on & lost (or stolen). If you must check bags, remember this: thieves don't usually steal bags, they steal individual items of value from those bags, counting on you not noticing. After all..., most of you are so happy to see the bag on the conveyor belt that you just grab the luggage & runRead More

So common sense would say, don't pack anything of value in the bags and the loss would be minimal. Not that I fly often, 3 times a year, but I always check my bags and have not had one lost yet. <touch wood>

Jet Blue only gives you FOUR HOURS to report stolen items (most airlines give you 24) and you have to report AT the airport. We had something stolen between Dulles and Boston. Landed at 11:30 pm, picked up luggage, arrived at hotel at 2 am, opened bag and found item missing. Too late to drive back to the airport in time to file a claim.

We were going to Puerto Rico for the month of December on Jet Blue and were worried about the lost luggage during stop over at JFK. So I went to the Post Office and got 2 Priority boxes and filled them to the brim with liquids that were over weight for carry on, o/c med, paper back books, Sauces and spices to be used for cooking, other canned ... Then were just took what we needed (including perscrip Meds) in carry-onSo easy and no stress. Didn't need many clothes since we had a wash & dryer. Will definitely do it again this year.

Is it possible truly experience a new city in eight hours on a long layover? One thing was for sure, there was no way I would spend my layover curled up in the airport lounge, no matter how tempting a nap and free nibbles sounded.

Peter Greenberg Named CBS News Travel Editor...Peter, congrats! I always enjoy checking in to learn from your insights and recommendations. A Frequent Flyer tip I have for leisure travel clients is....(1) Ideally, plan more than 11 months prior and get the seats as the airline opens them up or (2) Make a list of 10 d...estination you'd like to go to....try to include some destinations like Lima, Santiago and Quito, call the airline, figure out where they can get you on the dates that work for you, and plan the trip around the free ticket...then call on DavidTravel to design your journey :-)Read More
