The Church in the Matrix -- David Wells on Five Challenges Facing the Church

The American Evangelical church met the culture….and the culture won.

In spite of the vitality of its institutions and the size of its churches, there are signs of trouble. Having lost its cultural influence, it is now losing its young. Even more telling is its weakened spiritual identity. Distinguished evangelical theologian and cultural analyst David Wells asks, “Western culture is changing profoundly and that is raising a critical question: will the evangelical church continue to stumble amidst the affluence and brilliant technology of the West of will it once again find its ancient soul, but learn to speak with a contemporary voice?”

May 9th at 7 pm is the Benjamin Breckinridge Warfield Memorial Lecture Series Featuring a Lecture on The Church and Culture with the Alliance's Council member Dr. Gene Edward Veith. It will meet the Meinders School of Business Oklahoma City University.

D r. Veith will examine the tragic proposition of why the Church looks and thinks so much like our contemporary culture. If our conduct mirrors our culture and indeed there is ample evidence to suggest this, then what compelling message do we bring to the world? As tragic, the rise of postmodern thought has also entered the Church. The result is a loss of the transcendence of God, absolute truth, and an acceptance of syncretism, pragmatism, and pluralism. Dr. Veith will explore the implications of such conduct and theology and the history that has brought us to this point and remind us that the Church is to counter our culture with our distinctive message rather than be co-opted by it.
