Art Star is pleased to present Say Good Morning Tiger Lily, Amy Rice’s 2nd solo exhibition at Art Star Gallery. The show will be on display from July 31st – September 13th, 2009. An opening reception w/ the artist will be held on Friday, July 31st, from 5-9pm. The event is free & open to the public.
Beginning with n...ot-so-traditional print making methods (hand cut stencils and a Japanese Gocco printmaking toy) Minneapolis based mixed-media artist Amy Rice makes original, one-of-kind pieces by additionally employing acrylic, gouache, ink and collage. Her “canvases” range from weathered wood panels and found objects to antique envelopes, age-worn love letters, and found journal pages yellowed with time.
Rice draws inspiration for her work from childhood memories, both real and imagined (or just slightly exaggerated with time), the urban community in which she lives, vintage botanical prints, her dog Ella, bicycles, street art, random found objects, collective endeavors that challenge hierarchy, acts of compassion, downright silliness and things with wings.
Amy Rice has had solo exhibitions in galleries throughout the US and in the UK.
For Rice’s second solo exhibition at Art Star Gallery, Say Good Morning Tiger Lily, Rice embraces and expands upon her visual vocabulary of personal symbolism.
The artist states, It is not by accident nor is it because my artistic method lends itself to repetition that specific themes and images reemerge in my work. My symbols are personal and sometimes the degree of separation between my connection to an object/image/symbol and the average viewers’ interpretation is a wide expanse. Sometimes, even I am not fully aware of the significance of an element in my work while I am in the process of creating. My Mom (or others close to me) will say, “That is such a nice painting you did of that one day, that one thing…and I will say, “Oh, my, you are right, how could I have painted that and not known?” In “Say Good Morning Tiger Lily” I am making an effort to be more conscious of my use of metaphoric imagery and of my subconscious inspirations; to call out and name my personal symbolism, to give credit to my past and to give permission to myself to paint my future.
Say Good Morning Tiger Lily will include brand new work including Amy’s signature large stencil paintings. In addition, Amy will be featuring over 30 small collage paintings made from Gocco prints that were printed on antique journal pages.
