An Engineering Deans' Summit: Partnering thru Diversity to Address the Grand Challenges
The College of Engineering is excited to host a regional Delaware Valley Engineering Symposium, in partnership with the Council of Deans of Historically Black Colleges & Universities to convene on December 10, 2009 to address four o......f the National Academy of Engineering’s Grand Challenge’s for the 21st Century:
+ Engineering Innovation and Technology
+ Health (engineering better medicines; reverse-engineering the brain)
+ Urban Infrastructure (providing access to clean water)
+ K-20 STEM Education and Discovery
These particular challenges have special relevance to Southeastern Pennsylvania and the greater Delaware Valley region. Academic, industry and government leaders will have an opportunity to address these challenges. The over-arching goal is to improve K-20 STEM education and diversify pathways to STEM.
Goals of the Regional Symposium:
* Develop strategic research and funding collaborations between HBCU and Delaware Valley Colleges of Engineering to ensure matriculation of minority undergraduates into graduate and post graduate degree opportunities
* Develop policy recommendations to promote sustainable education reform benefitting STEM education
* Foster greater teacher/educator/counselor/parent/studen t awareness of STEM education and regional needs
We will conduct a daylong series of highly interactive panels involving leaders in academia, government, and industry.
Please register to attend this event at http://www.eventbrite.com/event/47459452 5.

Confessions of a Converted Lecturer
Engineering 102
Tuesday, September 22
12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
I thought I was a good teacher until I discovered my students were just memorizing information rather than learning to understand the material. Who was to blame? The students? The material? I will explain how I came to the ago......nizing conclusion that the culprit was neither of these. It was my teaching that caused students to fail! I will show how I have adjusted my approach to teaching and how it has improved my students' performance significantly.
