Sadly we report that Francisco Rodriguez passed away Sunday evening from the injuries he sustained in his fight with Teon Kennedy Friday at the Blue Horizon. Rodriguez was 25 years old.

On this day in 1961, the Blue Horizon debuted as a boxing venue with a fight-card promoted by Steve Tomassi and headlined by George Benton. Benton won the bout - a 3rd round KO over Chico Corsey - and the Blue Horizon went on to become one of the great boxing clubs in the country.

The Joey Giardello Statue Project is moving right along. This week, artist Carl LeVotch revealed his work-in-progress full-sized version of the former middleweight champion at his makeshift studio in the attic of the Veteran Boxers Club. Although the statue is far from complete, the work is stunning. LeVotch is on sche...dule to finish sculpting by the end of 2009. The mold-making and bronze casting phase will follow and is expected to wrap in time for a May 2010 unveiling. There is no doubt that this project will make Philly proud and produce a great a great tribute to Giardello and the city's storied boxing history.
