Philosophy Talk Today's show: Philosophy in Fiction

Philosophers think a lot about fiction. But do novelists think about philosophy? Do philosophers make good fictional characters? Can good stories be built around philosophical problems? When awarding its Genius prize to philosopher-novelist Rebecca Goldstein, the MacArthur Foundation ...said "[her] writings emerge as brilliant arguments for the belief that fiction in our time may be the best vehicle for involving readers in questions of morality and existence.'' Ken and John explore philosophy in fiction with Rebecca Goldstein, author of "The Mind-Body Problem" and "36 Arguments for the Existence of God."

According to Proverbs, lying lips are an abomination to the Lord. But lies on human lips are as common as fleas on a dog. What is a lie? Are all untruths lies? Is lyin...g always immoral? Do our faces inevitably betray our lies? Join the hosts as they uncover the concept, practice, and detection of lies with pioneering psychologist Paul Ekman, author of "Emotions Revealed: Recognizing Faces and Feelings to Improve Communication and Emotional Life" and "Telling Lies: Clues to Deceit in the Marketplace, Politics, and Marriage."

Philosophy Talk Kierkegaard - This Sunday's show. Philosophy usually suggests a striving for rationality and objectivity. But the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard advocated subjectivity and the leap of faith – his conception of how an individual would believe in God or act in love. Kierkegaard, whose best-known work is Fear and Tr...embling, is often considered the father of Existentialism. Ken and John explore the life and thought of this passionate philosopher with Lanier Anderson from Stanford University.

I'm listening to this episode now. Finally, you guys do something on a philosopher that matters! (the St. Augustine episode was great) I think focusing another episode out of Ken's list of most hated philosophers would bring you guys your highest ratings yet! The funniest part is when Ken says "and so Kierkegaard thinks that's really cool" after speaking on Abraham's call to sacrifice Issac.

You are confusing Ken and John. John is the one who dissed Kierkegaard. Ken loves all philosophers whose names begin with K including Kant, Kierkegaard, Kripke and even Kuhn!

Philosophy Talk Join Philosophy Talk and guest Marilyn Yalom for our first of two live recording sessions at The Marsh Theatre on Sunday January 31st: "What is a Wife?"

Wives have been around since Eve, and the concept of being a wife has been embedded in cultures, religious practices, social customs and economic patterns of wildly dif...ferent sorts. Is there a core concept of what it is to be a wife? Is it a good concept, or one that deserves to be thrown on the junkpile of intellectual history -- like the concept of a witch -- because it perpetrates corrosive stereotypes of women? What conceptions of being a wife do Americans have today? Join John and Ken as they discuss wives and the concept of being a wife with Marilyn Yalom, author of "A History of the Wife."

Philosophy Talk Some people think Jesus was the son of God, though many who are skeptical about that still think he was a great moral teacher. But if we really knew what Jesus would think about moral issues that he didn't confront while he lived – abortion, terrorism, euthanasia, gay marriage or the destruction of old-growth redwoods ...– would it be that helpful? Would his moral vision have any implications for these issues?

Ken and John discuss the moral philosophy of Jesus and its contemporary relevance with Andrew Fiala, Director of the Ethics Center at Fresno State University and author of "What Would Jesus Really Do? The Power and Limits of Jesus' Moral Teachings."

This program was recorded in front of a live audience at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, California.

There are many hot topics that Jesus didn't address while he was here on earth... but I believe that despite the lack of biblical information regarding these specific controversial issues, that Jesus succeeded in answering the real question, one that resonates behind all the moral issues mentioned above... Ethics. How can we distinguish between ... See Morewhat is right and what is wrong? His message is clear, there is no righteousness in man.. man is to be grounded in the power that constituted his existence, only then will he become righteous... Kierkegaard said it best... Man is a synthesis of the finite and the infinite... man is not yet a self until he is transparently grounded in the power that constituted his existence. Salvation - is a journey of self-amelioration... uniting our present (finite-definite) selves with our (infinite-indefinite) selves... we cannot accept Jesus as being "just a man/messenger". He is either a.) The Son of God, as supported in the Gospel Records (Who he says he is) or b.) a complete wack job... We cannot accept his teachings which derive from the Gospel Records, when the Gospel Records themselves state that Jesus considered himself to be the Son of God... Anyways, yeah it sucks that I missed this radio broadcast on the relevance of Jesus... I wish I knew about this radio station sooner... :(

I can't believe you have more than 20 buyers per month of your podcasts @ three bucks a show, and they're mostly other profs and pastors like Jennifer who put it on their expense accounts. What a waste that you go to so much effort to tape the shows and such a small percentage of would be listeners hear the exchanges in the Bay Area. Streaming is by its very nature inconvenient.
