September 7: Utilitarianism
Can morality be quantified? Can the good be calculated? Utilitarianism says the right action is the one which leads to the most overall happiness -– a deceptively simple theory, but not without its detractors. Is utilitarianism compatible with the idea that people have inalienable rights? Should we be so focused on the consequences of our actions? John and Ken welcome Wayne Sumner from the University of Toronto, author of The Hateful and the Obscene: Studies in the Limits of Free Expression.

Hi all,

I've always been curious about people who believe that there is life after death and that life is just a type of test in which we are put by some great power or some cosmic karma administrator. This sounds like if life would be some sort of video game to make more and better points. Curiously I think that this idea help a lot of people to face the death of close relatives and beloved persons.

The theme of video games can be a nice take up for PT. It occurs to me as if you could treat the subject as a metaphor or as inspiration of philosophical problems or as a pedagogical tool or even as a new form of interactive artistic expression. I don't know exactly what perspective would fit better for PT at this moment since good possibilities are many.

I personally would love a discussion of video games as a good way to establish mental experiments. Bringing to the table of PT special examples and future possibilities of video games can surely make a good show.

What would motivate you to particiapte in a Philosophy Talk poll?

I would be curious to see what other listeners think of a particular episode.

I would like to vote on upcoming show topics.

Nothing. I hate polls.

I like to see how I compare to others.

I think poll results could spark philosophical discussions.
