Physique Essentials ARTICLE - Festive Nutrition

Last week I introduced the notion of starting your New Year’s Resolution program early to get in control before the actual event arrives. I also know for some that whilst the motivation might be high, putting the plan into action will be incredibly hard. Christmas is getting closer and for me... just today, the prospect of freshly baked goods in my own home has popped up so now I will have the temptations myself.

With all the opportunity and a relaxed environment and mind set, how do we successfully navigate through the festive period whilst staying on track with our health and fitness goals? With education and a plan, or course!

Part of staying on course will be to determine your goals. What is it that you really want to achieve in 2010 and are they realistic? Next comes down to formulating your plan to make these goals a reality:

- How many times a week do I need to do physical exercise
- How do I need to structure my nutritional plan

These 2 points (obviously tied together with consistency, focus, determination and effort) are all we have at our disposal to generate the goals that we are looking for, so it pays to understand as much about them as possible. As I have talked about these topics many times in the past too, I won’t focus on them too much – rather on how you can navigate them through a busy festive period?

If you don’t have the time, make time.

A common restriction I will often hear be in the form of time management. “I don’t have the time to exercise”. Of course you do! Remember it can take a little as 20 minutes for effective cardio vascular training, or 35-45 minutes of quality resistance training to generate results. If you look hard enough, you will always find time. My advice would be to look in the mornings before the festive commitments take over. It will seem impossible to excuse yourself from a Christmas party to go to the gym, but you could complete your session before you go? This way you get your session done, stay on track physically and provide the right scenario to stay on track nutritionally.

Nutrition though, will always be the greatest challenge. How good you do will really depend on what you know about the food you are eating as well as being aware of your total consumption over the course of a day. By now you know that when it comes to meal selection; we are looking for lean proteins, lots of plant based foods (i.e. – vegetables) and good sources of fats to make up our meals, so that is what you should be looking for on the buffet plate – not necessarily party pies.

Keep a strong conviction and stay on track. Getting through one Christmas party successfully will provide the momentum to get through the next and so on… and before you know it, 2010 will be here and you will be well and truly in control!

Physique Essentials Resolution Insight!

Can you believe that there are only 5 weeks left of 2009? If you are like me, you are probably scratching your head in shock, wondering where the year has gone.

Problematic, as the year is starting to wind down we welcome work drinks, Christmas parties and a general ‘caution to the wind’ in regards t...o our health and fitness.

“I will enjoy it now, and get fit on January 1st” – does this sound familiar?

Yes, I am talking about the New Year’s Resolution – a burden that swallows up millions of Australians every year and the hard question to ask yourself; this year are you going to be one of them? Why do we wait for the New Year?

Why do we generally live a lifestyle that causes us pain and frustration, and reward ourselves with the very thing that gives us the pain (ie: the chocolate cake puts on the weight, so I will eat more cake)? If you are absolutely, 100% determined to make this year YOUR year, then you should be able to start your resolve NOW, not in 5 weeks time.

Why wait?

Why not start NOW?

If you can’t, what is holding you back?

Do you REALLY want to have optimal health in 2010?

What is your GOAL, do you have one and is it realistic and achievable?

Taking the first step is definitely the hardest and most daunting but one you must make. But you know what; the second step is a lot easier…

Day 1 is hard, day 2 is a little easier, day 3 is a little easier again and by day 21 – hopefully we have built some new habits and this is when you will really start to see some powerful and life changing results, when you have created new HABITS and when you are in CONTROL

Maybe you are worried about the Christmas blowout so will wait until after the festive season to get started. Again why wait? If you started right NOW then by Christmas you will have many new and positive habits in place and I guarantee you will be able to survive the silliness in control. And if the unthinkable happens and you fall off the wagon, you will have the knowledge to be able to jump right back on board and start moving forward again!

Creating new habits and working towards them, and achieving new personal bests with a new lease on life is what you should be striving for.

The most difficult part is always going to be getting started and developing these new habits. So I urge you, don't wait until the New Year - now is the time to get started! You cannot expect change if you change nothing, with the only guarantee being that you will continue to be unhappy if you don’t step forward and accept the challenge.

Plus, can you even imagine how much better will you look, feel and perform by the New Year if you already have 5 weeks under your belt?

I know getting started is hard, so if you would like some personal advice I am happy to help. Let’s move into 2010 full of momentum and all systems go to being your absolute best!
