Piffaro, The Renaissance Band
Distinguished for the lavishness of their instrumental music and singing in the divine office of the Catholic Church, the Portuguese clerics, musicians, and composers maintained a notable reputation through the Iberian peninsula and beyond. A Marian Vespers for the season of Advent, such as heard in the great Portugues...e cathedrals of Lisbon, Coimbra or Evora in the 17th century, will present the grandiloquent polychoral Psalms and Magnificat of Joao Lourenco Rebelo, together with sacred works by Antonio Pinheiro and Estevao de Brito. The concert will also feature the rhythmically vital and textually earthy villancicos of native son, Gaspar Fernandez, and will climax with the stunning, highly intimate and devotional Salve Regina by Diogo Dias Melgas. Piffaro will be joined by the member of the Choral Arts Society, Matthew Glandorf, director, and guest brass players Kiri Tollaksen (cornetto) and Erik Schmalz and Mack Ramsey (sackbuts)Read More
