Plymouth (Michigan) Historical Museum
The Plymouth Historical Museum will be holding a "Collector's Showcase" on
the third Saturday of February, March, April, and May during it's "Show
and Tell Collectibles" exhibit that opens February 10. We are looking for collectors to sign up for a table or two, at no cost to you. You can even sell items you are trying t...o unload, if you so choose. What's the catch?
There is no catch. We are hoping to generate more traffic to the Museum
and are offering these "Collector's Showcases" as a draw. We will be
open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on:
Saturday, February 20
Saturday, March 20
Saturday, April 17
Saturday, May 15
The
last day, Saturday, May 15, is also Armed Forces Day, so we are hoping
to have that day be a "Military Collectors Day." But the other days are
open to most any type of collectibles, as long as they are family
friendly and, we're hoping, that they have some historic value. The
collector should be present the entire day to explain their collections
to visitors, as the tables will be either on the Museum's Main Street
or in the Sanford Burr Meeting Room and will not be protected.
The
application that we request collectors to fill out is available at the
link below. We hope to see you at the Plymouth Historical Museum!

But that Red Ryder air rifle that the movie's narrator, Ralphie, longs for would have been made in Plymouth by the Daisy Manufacturing Co.

Plymouth (Michigan) Historical Museum
The Museum's new special exhibit, “A Red Ryder Christmas Story,” draws its inspiration from the popular 1983 movie, A Christmas Story, in which the main character, Ralphie, longs for a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Throughout our Main Street there are vignettes of scenes from the movie and from the original story tha...t the movie is based on—Plymouth Historical Museum style. Red Ryder BB guns were sold by Daisy Manufacturing Company of Plymouth.
Jean Shepherd was the author of a series of semi-autobiographical short stories that were used as the basis for
the movie A Christmas Story. The short stories appeared originally in Playboy magazine between 1964 and 1966. One story, “Duel in the Snow, or Red Ryder nails the Cleveland Street Kid,” details the adventures of Ralphie with his beloved Red Ryder BB gun, as he was growing up in Hammond, Indiana. The stories are witty and nostalgic of the late depression era and early years of World War II.
The Museum’s exhibit seeks to recapture that nostalgic spirit by displaying period toys, clothing, and other artifacts. Visitors familiar with the movie will get a chuckle from the vignettes showing the Parker’s living room; the “FRA-GEE-LAY” lamp; Flick getting his tongue stuck on a pole; the windows at Higbee’s Department Store; and other memorable moments.
Each Saturday in December before Christmas, Santa Claus has promised to be present for visiting children. The Museum is open 1–4 p.m. on Saturdays, as well as Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The Plymouth Historical Museum is located at 155 S. Main Street, just north of downtown Plymouth. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for students 6-17, and $10 for families. Groups can be accommodated, but please call 734-455-8940 for a reservation.
