Alvan Bolster Ricker Memorial Library and Community House

The Friends of the Ricker Library have planned a series of monthly programs and potluck suppers. We invite you to join us for a friendly evening of conversation over a meal, followed by a program of interest, usually with a local slant. We expect that the programs will feature local speakers and/or topics that connect …with the interests of Poland residents.

With the exception of October, the suppers will be held in the library on the second Sunday of the month, beginning in September and lasting through April. (October's potluck is scheduled for October 4th, since the second Sunday is during a holiday weekend). Suppers will begin at 6PM and the evening's program will be at 7PM, lasting until 8PM. Guest are asked to bring a casserole, and a salad or dessert to share. Rolls and beverages will be provided by the Friends.

This is intended to be a family affair and all are welcome. We hope you will circle the dates on your calendar now and join us regularly for the fun!

September's program is titled "Backyard Birds" and will feature John Weinrich, an interpretive naturalist and member of the Midcoast Audubon Society.

John Weinrich, a former Poland resident, currently lives in New Castle, Maine, where he is vice president of the mid-coast chapter of the Audubon Society. With that organization, he has served as compiler for the mid-coast Maine Christmas Bird Count and worked on water quality testing of the Sheepscot River watershed. He was the primary energy behind his chapter's nest and box feeder program. As an instructor for Maine Senior College, his courses include Song- birds of Maine and Raptors of Maine. John also enjoys photographing Maine birds and he will share some of his photographs with his audience.

About the LaClaires:
Phil and Ellen LaClaire have a passion for acoustic root…s, bluegrass and gospel music. They have been singing in church since they were children and both come from extended families who spent many evenings playing traditional ballads, gospel and old time country music together. When they married in 1972, they combined their musical interests and eventually formed The LaClaire Family Band that originally included daughters Jessica and Sarah, Mom Beverly LaClaire and Uncle Al Williams.

Phil is an accomplished musician vocally and on the guitar and banjo. Ellen lends support with the upright bass, vocal harmonies and an occasional rift on the mandolin. Jeanine Loubier is an accomplished musician, talented on guitar, banjo, mandolin and bass. 15 years of traveling with The LaClaire band has blended her strong vocals beautifully with Phil & Ellen. Jeanine’s early years growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma provide her a musical background full of bluegrass and country. She has helped immeasurably in molding the LaClaire sound. She is truly a part of the LaClaire family heritage!
