John Vasconcellos has for many years been a hero for the underdogs and the downtrodden in our state and for those who felt that their voice would not be heard. He came to the rescue when others were not up to the challenge. He gave us courage when times were difficult and strength to stand up and continue. He has taugh...t us to look ahead and have the vision to make a difference and raise the bar. That to have a dream that a more harmonious system can emerge and is within our grasp and is not only doable but will be achieved with teamwork. His legacy is mighty and his genius is masterful. No words can describe what he teaches but the closest ones I can find is, "common sense".Read More

Yes, John is a hero of mine and I hope many. Glad to find this active Facebook page and that in spite of all, education (thanks to your persistance, John) is somehow being considered.

Growing up in CA in the '60s we had very good schools...will they continue to crumble more in philosophy and support than in bricks and mortar?

Try your hand at closing California’s budget shortfall, now estimated at $26.3 billion. It’s not easy, but it can be done. Cut spending, raise taxes and/or borrow to get the state out of the red. For each ...

Hi John, Good to be in touch with you! Sorry to hear about your recent hospital visit. I have been working really hard looking into #usbil #HR2749. Food Safety Enhancement Act and how it can really hurt our local organic farmers and the Farmers Market System. I wrote about that here.

That week that I stayed in Sacramento with you and visited the Capitol continues to be a treasured memory. One of the Seed Dreams I planted,
a garden in Capital Park, seems to be coming into form thanks to Maria

You are always in my best thoughts for health.

Nancy Hi John and Friends: Glad to have JV's take on the budget mess. I am sorry but I cannot blame the Dems for much as they are the majority and have a governor who has opposed it seems just about everything attempted as far as I understand.

The two thirds majority budget vote needs changed and we need to raise taxes. CA deserves to be a place worth living and so we all may need to give.

Good OpEd!
We need a combination of solutions to get our state out of this mess this year, for the next few years, and beyond:
- Amend Prop 13 to close a loophole and create the so-called 'split roll' where homeowners continue with current protections and business properties pay their fair share.
- Amend state constitution to allow our elected state ... Read Morelegislature to pass a budget by a clear and simple majority--just like almost all other states. This should be done in conjunction with modifying the new tax threshold to a 60% supermajority (from the existing two-thirds).
- Suspend or repeal the costly big business tax breaks that were handed out earlier this year. ... Read More
- Institute a carefully crafted and flexible "rainy day fund" for California. Not a hard spending cap, but a meaningful set aside in good years that could be used to cover potential deficits in lean years.

There's plenty of blame to go around in the budget crisis. Fingers can be pointed at Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Democrats, Republicans -- and you and me.
