Located in the heart of Portland’s Downtown Arts District, Maine College of Art is a dynamic college of art and design, offering nationally recognized faculty, interdisciplinary programs, and state-of-the-art facilities. Founded in 1882 and fully accredited, MECA offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in ten majors - Ceramics, Graphic Design, Illustration, Metalsmithing & Jewelry, New Media, Photography, Printmaking, Painting, Sculpture, and Woodworking & Furniture Design. Students can also enroll in the Post-Baccalaureate in Art Education program, leading to K-12 teaching certification in art.
MECA is a first-name kind of place. Everyone knows everyone - and their work. It's a community of acceptance and of challenge, where conversation - lively, personal and passionate - is pervasive, and may start in a class and conclude hours later in a restaurant. It's a community of spontaneous dance parties, midnight midterm pancakes, shared soup-and-bread lunches. But there's also respect for the creative process and for the space, quiet and solitude it demands. That's why MECA juniors and seniors have their own studio space in their major department. And MECA knows that art is not a 9-to-5 kind of job. That's why all students have access to the building 24/7.
