Shining City Productions is excited to bring Peter Mulvey back to Portland to celebrate the release of his 12th CD, Letters From A Flying Machine. “I like making records,” reflects songwriter Peter M...ulvey, “but my job is the live show: getting up in a room and taking people somewhere.”
Born, raised, and living now in Milwaukee, WI, Peter Mulvey is a singer/songwriter/guitarist who honed his skills on the streets of Dublin and in the subways of Boston. Peter defies the word "folk" and stamps acoustic/alternative music with his own edgy, funky style. Said The Irish Times: "Peter Mulvey is consistently the most original and dynamic of the US singer-songwriters to tour these shores... a phenomenal performer with huge energy, a quickfire quirky take on life, an extraordinary guitar style (somewhere between Leo Kottke's delicacy and Ani DiFranco's attack), and lyrically rewarding material... a joy to see."
"This disc is actually more like a live show than any record I have made," says Mulvey. On Letters From a Flying Machine, his articulate, inquisitive songcraft serves as a guide, leading the listener on a thoughtfully constructed journey in search of answers to some formidable existential questions and ending with, hopefully, a tiny but shining epiphany. "Through the songs and stories on this album, I'm trying to figure out what actually lasts a long time,: Mulvey explains. "So it is set up to listen all the way through to take this voyage. I want the listener to hear the end of the album differently than they heard the beginning. It's a record that's actually about something. This is an old human statement, I know, but when all else has crumbled, love is the only thing that is real." His twelfth album, Letters From a Flying Machine heralded a drastic change in Mulvey's process. Richly acoustic, with a hint of rustic clatter befitting the album's themes of antiquity, obsolescence, and progress, Letters From a Flying Machine puts Mulvey's nimble guitar front and center, framing it with contributions from several key associates. It's also the first Mulvey album to feature spoken word pieces, a long time staple of his live performances.

Antje Duvekot is one of the brightest singer-songwriters to rise out of Boston's competitive acoustic music scene. She is releasing her second studio album, "The Near Demise of the High Wire Dancer" on Black Wolf Records on March 17, 2009.
Antje chose one of h...er favorite songwriters, Richard Shindell to produce the album. Richard lent his talent to the record and brought in well respected musicians such as John Gorka, Lucy Kaplansky and Victor Krauss.
"What a blessing to have worked with someone as talented as Antje. With a voice like hers, and songs as good as these, a producer (especially a first-time producer!) just tries to get out of the way, to do no harm, and to let the artist speak for herself." - Richard Shindell
"The Near Demise of the High Wire Dancer" demonstrates why, according to The Boston Globe, "Antje Duvekot's provocative, dark-eyed ballads are becoming the
talk of the folk world. Duvekot has gotten hotter, faster than any local songwriter in recent memory."
The songs on the album reflect both Duvekot's personal journeys and her observations of those of others. Antje remarks "I've come to find that writing about someone else's struggles or happiness feels just as cathartic as writing about my own."
"As far as I can tell, Antje is the whole package… I've had this reaction once in the past 10 years, and that was the first time I heard Patty Griffin... Antje has proven once again that she ranks with the most intense and beautiful songwriter on the planet"- Dave Marsh former Editor of Rolling Stone and XM/ Sirius Satellite Host

Renowned sidemen in their own right, Chris Mosley and Sam Howard take center stage to sing you the songs of their souls. Original alt-county music influenced by years of listening to the classics and backing up some of the finest (Heather Masse & Aoife O'Donovan Band, Blue Cranes, Echo Helstro...m, Aaron Berg & The Heavy Love, Commotion). Myshkin has stories to tell and the means to tell them. She writes with a dark and subtle wit, raw honesty, and a painters eye. Her compositions bear the mark of an artist who finds inspiration all over the map and incorporates far flung musical ideas with a passionate ease. Who always has an ear out for beauty but pay...s little attention to trends. The result is an uncommonly timeless modern music.
The music of Myshkin's Ruby Warblers ranges from tango to electronica, old time to modern classical to jazz, and each leave an imprint of their unique talents on the music. Myshkin plays an 80 year old martin tenor guitar, a vintage gibson six string, and a jumbo lowden acoustic. Her voice is her finest instrument though, and she wields it like a fortune teller, an acrobat, a hunter, a gift.
Myshkin is currently living in the mountains of Southern Oregon, building a studio made of cob (clay sand and straw), and focused on completing her newest and most ambitious album, a bird's eye view of the mad world that continues to inspire her.
"Fiercely talented, elegantly skewed" - Time Out UK
"A giant among songwriters " - City Life, Manchester UK
"A poet who has something to say; dense, dark songs rendered beautifully" - Dirty Linen

When Annabelle Chvostek joined the Wailin' Jennys in 2004, the rest of the world found out what a grassroots network of Canadian roots fans had known for several years: that Chvostek is a formidable songwriter, a versatile multi-instrumentalist, and a fearless and innovative artist whose beguiling left-of-centre compositions straddle the divide between mainstream roots and acoustic indie pop.
After two and a half years of recording and touring with the Jennys', highlights of which included several appearances on A Prairie Home Companion, performing at New York's legendary Town Hall and singing on the Juno Awards telecast, Chvostek has released her much-anticipated solo album, Resilience. She receives consistent rave reviews around the world and inspires audiences wherever she goes, both as a solo act and with her powerfully sensitive trio of Tony Spina on drums and Jérémie Jones on upright bass.
"Ms. Chvostek won our hearts and minds... Her show was one of those magical, chemistry-connected sets, with a sense of discovery attached... Singing with pluck and precision, Ms. Chvostek exudes organic musicality, whether when digging into folky roots music or art-pop turf…" - Santa Barbara News-Press
“A powerful solo artist … gorgeous lead vocal and deft guitar playing … her new recording is a fantastic piece of work. Despite being acoustic, it rocks fiercely.” - Collected Sounds

Dusk is a bittersweet time of day. There’s no other point in the sun’s arc that captures the imagination quite like it. Maybe the Nashville-based alt. folk-pop duo the Bittersweets can’t literally splash a sunset across the sky,... but they bring the same striking contrast of shadow and luminescence to the ears. The Bittersweets—Chris Meyers (guitar, keyboards, vocals) and Hannah Prater (vocals, guitar)—live up to their name. They fuse yellows and blues, sunniness and melancholy, with evocative lyrics and lush arrangements, transcendent melodies and Prater’s alluring voice.

Chic Gamine, the roguishly charming Winnipeg/Montreal-based vocal quintet, has been serenading its audiences since the summer of 2007. By complete coincidence, the group is composed of the 5 “A’s”: singers Ariane Jean, Andrina Turenne, Alexa Dirks, Annick Brémault and drummer and percussionist Alexandre Sacha Daoud. Ov...er the years, its members have been integral parts of a multitude of projects, notably, R’n’B/Soul sensation little boy boom, Brazilian Funk/Pop flavoured Gaïa and International Independent Music Award laureate, World Vocal ensemble Madrigaïa.
With a solo percussionist as their main musical support, Chic Gamine use their voices as instruments, effortlessly launching into intricate string arrangements, bass-heavy rhythm sections and lush harmonies. These multifariously talented songwriters create a sound that resonates with soul, passion and an unabashedly random and sometimes downright peculiar brand of humour that reels audiences in and leaves them begging for more. Gospel, Soul, R’n’B, 50’s Doo-Wop, Brazilian forro and French Chanson are infused into the voices and rhythms of these 5 schemers and effervescent songmakers. And the whole is liberally doused with the most total, sibylline insouciance unique to Chic Gamine…
"They are a musical tempest. Chic Gamine's live performance made me feel that I had just witnessed a very important musical moment. Bravo!"

Folk goddesses Aoife O'Donovan (of Crooked Still) and Heather Masse (of The Wailin Jennys) unite to wail and still the ears and hearts of west coast audiences this April 2009. Aoife and Heather were classmates, collaborators, and friends while attending The New England Conservatory of Music from 00'-04'. Five years lat...er, both having made a name for themselves in the music world, they reunite joining forces to sing together again. They will be making their way to the west coast to perform their original songs and music accompanied by a full band from April 19th-26th.
New York-based singer song-maker Heather Masse grew up in rural Maine and began singing at an early age. Having taken a degree in Jazz Voice from the New England Conservatory of Music, Heather is steeped in the jazz tradition, which informs her distinct approach to singing music of all sorts. She is a member of the acclaimed Juno Award winning Canadian band “The Wailin' Jennys”, and has performed at hundreds of venues across the country including appearances on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion. She has performed with the renowned contemporary bluegrass band "The Wayfaring Strangers," and has appeared at venues including NPR's World Cafe, the Somerville Theater, and Boston's Symphony Hall, sharing the stage with the Boston Pops Orchestra. In 2006, she recorded an eponymous album with the Boston-based group "Joy Kills Sorrow," a modern string band that finds it home in the cracks between bluegrass, jazz, old-time, and pop styles, as well as a self-released EP Tell Me Tonight, a collection of original songs performed with her own Brooklyn-based outfit “Heather and the Barbarians.” Heather’s rich, soulful, voice elegantly moves through numerous styles organically and with sincerity, a quality learned from some of her early influences including Ray Charles, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, and Chet Baker.
"What a voice! Every once in a while I happen on a voice so pure, with such great texture, intonation, time and phrasing that it stops me in my tracks. Heather Masse has all that and more." - John Ziegler, KUMD

She is also a member of the folk-noir trio, "Sometymes Why." 2007 has seen Aoife on stages from the Shetland Islands to Yosemite National Park, with stops across Europe, Canada, and the USA in between. Though just beginning to play shows featuring her own material, her quirky original songs have garnered praise worldwide. Originally from Newton, Massachusetts, Aoife continues to make her home in the musical hotbed of Boston.

Former Northwesterner Tracy Grammer returns to town for a solo appearance at the intimate Crystal Theater on Friday, April 10th, where she has sold out the last few times through (she will also be in Kalispell the next night at the KM Theater).
This just in: We are excited to have longtime Missoulian Jenn Adams, who ha...s been living elsewhere (Nashville, Maine, Boston....?) for years, back in town to open this show! See more about Jenn at www.jennadams.com.
Tickets are on sale now here: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/produce r/3617
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For the uninitiated, Tracy Grammer rose to acclaim as one half of the duo, Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer. Called "one of the fastest-rising acts in folk music" by the Boston Globe, the duo released three internationally acclaimed albums featuring Carter's award-winning postmodern, mythic Americana song craft; toured with Joan Baez as her backing band and spotlight artists; and earned a diverse and devoted following with their indelible live performances at festivals and venues all across North America. (See www.daveandtracy.com for the complete Dave & Tracy story.)
Just as the duo seemed poised to receive much-deserved mainstream recognition, Carter died suddenly of a heart attack while touring with Grammer in July, 2002. He was 49. Since 2003, Grammer has been touring solo and as a duo with Jim Henry. She still sings the songs of Dave Carter, as well as carefully selected songs by other artists she admires, as well as a few of her own. She has released three solo albums since 2004, the full-length studio album Flower of Avalon (2005), as well as two 7-song EPs, The Verdant Mile (2004) and Book of Sparrows (2007). All three have rated high on the national folk radio charts. Audiences are drawn to the warmth and intimacy of her performances, and her voice, that golden voice.
“Tracy Grammer is a brilliant artist and unique individual. Her voice is distinctive, as is her mastery over the instruments she plays.” - Joan Baez
“Armed with a few of the sassier members of the string family, and a voice as nuanced and strong as you could hope for, Grammer delivers ... with a supernatural force that funnels straight through your ear to the deep, deep center of your heart.” - The Missoula Independent
"A musician and singer of dazzling versatility..." - No Depression
“[Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer have] become a treasured part of my music collection... Flower of Avalon presents more songs by Dave Carter, with Tracy at the helm as artist, interpreter, co-producer and the beating heart at the center of it all. Her pure voice conveys the simple truths of these songs; her gifts as a musician are like that of a painter who is a master of chiaroscuro, offering light and shadow at every turn.... I was honored and humbled by the invitation to sing on this record.“ - Mary Chapin Carpenter
Tracy Grammer returns to Missoula, Jenn Adams opens!
