The Portland Japanese Garden What a nice, mild day to view the emerging blossoms in the Garden. Did you know, the name of the "higan" cherry, pictured here, comes from a Buddhist term meaning "the other shore"—an ideal land where hot & cold, night & day are in perfect balance—in other words, we can say these cherry blossoms are a glimpse of paradise.

Yes, Sundays are a popular day to visit the Garden! We're open year-round (with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day).

Food and drink is not allowed inside the Garden, but there are several nearby areas in Washington Park appropriate for a picnic.

Our Tour Coordinator can prearrange special rates for groups of 10 or more--please see details at http://www.japanesegarden.com/tours... See More

Thank you for your interest!

Robin Long

Robin Long I've never been to the Japanese Gardens and am thinking of coming this weekend! How big is the garden? I'm assuming there is a lot of walking? Is it spread out pretty wide?

Hi Robin, We look forward to having you here. The Garden is about 5.5 acres, with five different garden styles. On average, expect to spend about 45min to an hour walking to take in the views.

David M. Cobb I look forward to meeting everyone at the upcoming photography workshop at The Portland Japanese Garden. I guess both days are now sold out. If you're interested, there are still two spots available for my "Gardens of Victoria" photo workshop in late April.

Owner and president of Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery and the Flora Wonder™ Arboretum, Talon is a wholesale grower of Japanese maples, dwarf and ...unusual conifers, and other choice ornamental trees and shrubs. He'll speak about his long experience with developing new varieties of Japanese maples—how they are selected, trialed, and introduced.

Talon's nursery fosters an environment where the discovery, trial, and introduction of new species and cultivars are a principal focus. Many Buchholz introductions are grown across the United States and Canada as well as Europe and Japan; and many choice new plants from abroad are first made available to Americans by Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery. Mr. Buchholz and his staff enjoy close relationships and plant sharing with some of the world's greatest growers of plants.
