Recently shared with our coalition: There are some good points to take away from this one. The cattlemen
complain of the loss of 1,00s of cattle due to human theft. It's notable
that Oregon has lost only 1 calf to wolves in the last 60+ years. The
cattlemen also complain of losses to cougars and coyotes. Not surprisin...gly,
they don't mention recent
research from Ripple & Beschta that touched on the ability of wolves
(unlike humans) to reduce coyote numbers.
Still the article closes
with this:
"Two wolves have been allowed to be killed in northeast
Oregon because of perdition and because their numbers have reached sufficient
levels despite being on the endangered species list, Jones said. He said, with
numbers of elk in the northeast part of the state on the rise, once the wolves
discover that, they will be coming into Oregon in packs rather than in singles
or pairs."
A part of me wonders if "perdition" was a purposeful word choice by
an author with a sense of irony rather than one who is unfamiliar with the
spelling of depredation. Probably not.Read More

So what is the point of killing these wolves? Were they killing livestock? Wolves basking in the sun in the wilderness with elk grazing nearby and one that makes eye contact is shot? What did that accomplish? An apparent lone wolf in the Bitterroot is shot and for what?

According to a new study, most wolves lose their prowess by age 3. After that, they have to rely on younger members of the pack to catch the majority of their meals.

MiyooXat has a diffused light gray coloration, with a mostly white face without a classic "bandit mask" and a white belly. He has very tall legs and a long body, hence is the largest of the Owyhee Pack. He is quite independent and often wanders about his territory alone. He makes slow, deliberate and confident movem...ents, and if often seen sleeping in the sun. MiyooXat regularly follows or tracks handlers and visitors, which is why we call him the "Gray Tracker" and his namesake, "Wise Giant."Read More

Leq'eyleq'ey, like her sister, XayXayx, is pure white, but without the red tinges on her back. She appears quite gentle among the other wolves, and always maintains a very alert behavior when people are around. Her curiosity of humans is high at first, and then she tends to relax once she evaluates the handlers or vi...sitors. One unique characteristic of Leq'eyleq'ey is that she frequently walks along the intermittent stream and in the puddles of her enclosure, often causing mud "boots" to be worn on her white paws. Wolf Education & Research Center (WERC) XayXayx is known as "The White Watcher." She is a solid white color with some tinges of diffused light red across the saddle of her back. She has pronounced dark brown eyes, and a large build for a female and is the alpha-female of the Owyhee Pack, but rarely enforces her rank. She is always watching humans from near and far, hence her names, and is extremely curious of all events around her territory.

Kuckuc is the least social toward humans and the other members of the Owyhee Pack. She is also the most petite, and seems to always be moving quickly about her enclosure. She is the only Owyhee Pack member that possesses the famous classic gray wolf coloration, complete with the "bandit mask" around her eyes. Her ti...mid nature and classic ghostlike gray coloration are have earned her the name of the Little Gray Girl. Read More
