Jargon Buster
What do all those "library words" mean?
Every branch of knowledge has its own special vocabulary or jargon and in the Library you may come across some words from the subjects of librarianship and publishing that are unfamiliar to you. Each month we will attempt to demystify a piece of Library jargon.
This Month:
Catalogue
Computer program that enables you to check which books and journals are in stock at the library and where they are kept (also known as location). Each floor in the University Library has some computers with just the catalogue loaded on them. The catalogue is also available off-campus via our website

This Month's Frequently Asked Question is:
How many books can I borrow?
The Library has a range of loan types depending on the level of demand there is for a particular books and how many copies we have.
Students are allowed eighteen books on their record at any one time and nine of these books can be the seven day loans (with yellow tape).
Staff are allowed thirty books and, as with the sudents, nine of the thirty can be seven day loans.
Users also have an allowance on how many items they can borrow from the Short Loan Library. Up to three one day loans (with blue tape) and two four hour loans (with grey tape) can be borrowed
