Preservation Alliance of Minnesota Thank you to our wonderful Alliance directors for a great board meeting last night. We passed our 2010 budget with some exciting new programs--stay tuned. It was also a time to say thank you to two special board members, Laura Faucher and Mike Logan, who are leaving the board after six years (due to term limits). We'll miss you, Laura and Mike!

Preservation Alliance of Minnesota Sigh....After reading about Minnesota's projected $1.2 billion budget shortfall, feeling like our Tax Credit Task Force will need a steady IV of coffee this spring to lobby for passage of our state historic rehab tax credit. Here we go again--13th year is the charmer.

Old is the New Green: Preservation as Sustainable Design Symposium
Wednesday, November 11, 2009
AIA Minnesota Convention, Minneapolis Convention Center
The Preservation Alliance of Minnesota, in partnership with AIA Minnesota, is offering ‘Old is the New Green: Preservation as Sustainable Design,’ a four-session tract at ...the AIA Minnesota Conference on Wednesday, November 11th, 2009, exploring the connection between sustainable design and historic preservation. These sessions will allow participants to further their knowledge of historic preservation and green retrofit design, learn new research and cutting edge tools to quantify the value of retrofitting and adaptive reuse, and discover examples of sustainable preservation in the local community. Historic preservation is an inherently green action for its sustainable approach to construction and community reinvestment. Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation will present the conference keynote speech, “Sustainability begins with Preservation.”
The Preservation Alliance of Minnesota would like to thank our Presenting Sponsor, Target, for making “Old is the New Green: Preservation as Sustainable Design” possible.
Symposium Schedule:
• 7:00 – 8:15 am – Old is the New Green: New Directions in Historic Preservation Breakfast
o Preservation is the original green! Preservation’s emphasis on the reuse of existing built resources, the greening of current building stock and reinvestment in older, historic communities means that historic preservation is inherently sustainable development. This breakfast is designed to provide an introduction to the broader program entitled “Old is the New Green: Preservation as Sustainable Design” by providing an overview of current sustainability initiatives relating to existing historic buildings in Minnesota and across the nation. The program will reinforce the vital connections between preservation and sustainability. A continental breakfast will be provided.
• 8:30 – 10:00 am - Old is the New Green: Localize / Revitalize
o This program will demonstrate how historic preservation embodies sustainable design principles through real-life work examples. The owners and architects of several local projects will discuss how each represents sustainable design as well as preservation, and will outline any challenges encountered in merging historic preservation principles with sustainability guidelines.
• 10:15 – 11:30 am – Old is the New Green: Calculate to Renovate
o Preservation has embodied the principles of sustainable design for decades, but new research and cutting edge tools are showing how the ecological impact of historic preservation can be measured and quantified. This program will highlight several emerging areas of study, including material assembly life cycle analysis and system design.
• 2:30 – 4:00 pm – Old is the New Green: Sustainability begins with Preservation - Keynote address by Richard Moe, President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation
o Moe’s keynote will explore how the three principles of preservation can play a key role in fighting climate change, conserving energy and natural resources, and fostering sustainable development. He will also explain the need to apply green technology not only to new building design but the importance of being good stewards to those already built.
• ‘‘Windows Smackdown!”
o In the exhibit hall on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, look for this special exhibit and rapid-fire debate comparing the performance and ecological impact of repairing existing windows versus window replacement.
