Prevent Child Abuse Idaho

Prevent Child Abuse Idaho Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. If you are traveling with kids, I'd really encourage you to look at our Parent Talk piece referenced below. It's really some good food for thought. Let me just say I am grateful for all your love and caring for Idaho's kids and parents. We all need it, don't we?!

Prevent Child Abuse Idaho We just put up a new Parent Talk piece on the Idaho Children's Trust Fund's website. This month, Carolyn is telling stories and giving some tips on traveling with children. I know many of us are taking those holiday trips and they can be stressful. We're driving to the Bay area with our 3 (13 and twins who are 6). ...I'm keeping my fingers crossed (and making plans) for a fun journey!

Prevent Child Abuse Idaho I am in Chicago at a national meeting for Prevent Child Abuse America. We were talking about how communities can respond to high profile child abuse deaths. It seems like our response to Robert's death in the Treasure Valley and throughout the state is a pretty good model for how communities need to respond if we are... to builld nurturing communities that will work to end abuse and neglect of children.

We know pretty much most of the families in our area but we did go out of our way to meet the ones we didn't know. :) Great idea, thanks

Prevent Child Abuse Idaho Everyone be safe this Halloween! Make a goal to introduce yourself to three to five new people in your neighborhood. You could be at the beginning of a great new friendship you might have missed out on otherwise. :)

Prevent Child Abuse Idaho When you walk outside your house, could you name your neighbors living next to you? If you cannot, take this Halloween season as an opportunity to change that. Visit the attached link, read up about "Say Hello On Halloween," post the flyer on your door or window, and help us pass this information on to others to part...icipate. We cannot do everything, but if we each do something, we can help take care of eachother in our communities.

Sometimes you can't wait for someone to start the introductions. YOU might have to take the initiative and be the first to say hi. Many times, time allowing, that is followed by more conversation, particularly if you happen to be walking (with or without the dog) past their yard. Oh yeah, when they're out shoveling their mailbox this winter, maybe ... See Moreoffer to help. I have a snowblower on a tractor and take care of about a half mile of the mailboxes on my road which has led to my neigbors digging mine out when I'm not home. It's kinda a karma thing I guess, but I do it because I like to meet people so the fun of it all - that's my main motivation. 30 years ago when most of us had small kids we all chipped in and took turns watching them. Our woods have stayed relatively the same, even though the names on the mailboxes and the faces in the homes have changed a bit over the years. We may not be able to see each other's homes from our own (our lots are 5 acres and up), but we are a community anyway.

Thank you for sharing your stories. It shows that people are still taking the time to grow communication within their local neighborhoods. I hope others read your stories and find motivation to take their dog for a walk, or their family, and start introducing themselves.

Prevent Child Abuse Idaho Here's an interview I did with George Prentice at BSU Radio on Say Hello on Halloween. It's a pretty good conversation about what we can do to make our community a better place for kids.

- In memory of Robert Manwill and in response to a community's desire to do more for children, the Idaho Children's Trust Fund wants to "introduce" something new this Halloween. And "introduce" may be the operative word. ...

Prevent Child Abuse Idaho We're kicking off an event called Say Hello on Halloween to honor Robert Manwill by encouraging neighbors to get to know each other and especially to get to know the neighborhood children. We need help getting the word out and encouraging people to hang the placards that will be coming out in the next couple of days. More to come!

You're right, it IS a tough job. But not insurmountable! These are great comments. Great parents have learned that help is available - friends, mentors, pastors, etc. when necessary. And to Melanie, I'd bet your kids are likely lucky you are their mom!
